Pours a murky reddish-brown on tap with thin tan head and light lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, smokiness, and earthy hops. Taste follows with a decently balanced and bitter finish. Comes off more like a porter than a red, but probably one of Bold City’s best beers. Jlo7399 (218) - Florida, USA - JAN 7, 2013
Pours ruby. Aroma of roasted malts, little smoke, mild sweetness. Taste is malty, with a good balance of sweet and roast. Mouthfeel is thicker than expected. Good stuff. burg326 (5594) - Florida, USA - DEC 16, 2012
On draft at brewery, poured a dark brown color aromas of coffee, molasses, nuts, and some light chocolate. Flavors follow suit, more roasted malt than a traditional strong ale, but interesting none the less. alogan97 (71) - Jacksonville, Florida, USA - NOV 3, 2012
Hoppy, brown sugar, molasses aroma. Dark color, almost black with red hints. Minimal carbonation, syrupy on the palate. PorterPounder (8226) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - OCT 26, 2012
Jacksonville, Fl - Grassroots Natural Market - 22 oz bomber. Deep, dark coffee-like pour with a thin off-white head. Aroma has some nuttiness, a bit of coffee perhaps - not very distinctive. Full bodied flavor with some black coffee, a touch of unsweetened chocolate, a bit of potting soil, roasty back end. Thick enough mouthfeel. Decent.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2013 Pours dark brown with small head. Smells like roasted coffee. Mouthfeel is on point with medium body. tastes of roasty coffee. Pretty much just like a ver nice porter. Not sure why it is called a red ale, but hey it’s pretty good! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone BeerApostle (2) - - AUG 4, 2012 does not count
Very smoky for a red ale. I appreciate the homage to the 1901 fire...hence the smokey flavors. Still, great red ale. Mild citrus and herb notes with some cocoa/coffee undertones. drowland (8948) - Georgia, USA - JUL 30, 2012
7/30/12. 22oz bomber from Grassroots. Brown pour with a nice khaki head that fades too fast. Rich aroma of coffee and chocolate. Solid flavor of coffee, chocolate, and nuttiness. Reminds me of a brown ale. Not bad. cbfobes (2885) - Quad Cities, Illinois, USA - JUN 22, 2012
On tap at brewery, pours a dark amberish red with a thin white head, the aroma has a ton of malt and dark fruit in it with a slight amount of hops, the flavor has a nice malty backbone with some caramel and fruit in the finish, the hops really come through all that much but that’s okay for this brew, actually bought a growler of this. aracauna (3651) - Georgia, USA - MAY 26, 2012
Ok, unless this brewery got in a bad batch of hops or I’m suddenly not sensitive to the herb, Bold City is not good at adding enough hops. They are, however really good with the malt. In a style like this, they’re playing to their strengths. Almost a porter.
