UPDATED: JUL 24, 2017 Larnaka 19/7 2017. 50 cl bottle picked up in Minimarket in North Nicosia. Hazy bottle with the name of the beer printed directly on the bottle. Pull string cap. Pours hazy dark yellow with white head. Settles as thin patchy layer of foam barely covering the surface of the beer. Lacing on the side of the glass. Aroma is quite weak. Some sweet malts, a little caramel and not much else. Medium carbonation and watery palate. Flavor is medium sweet followed by medium bitterness. Aftertaste is lightly bitter with a touch of citrus. Nicely balanced but a little weak in the taste. I wonder if they got so caught up in making an unfiltered beer that they forgot to give it some actual taste.

I’m having a Turkish beer today. This bottle was picked up by my younger brother when he was in Turkey this summer. It’s brewed by Anadolu Efes, and it’s a bottle of their Bomonti Filtresiz. It’s an unfiltered pilsner brewed with 100% malt – no hops! Oh dear lord! That’s like trying to make peanut butter without peanuts. But let’s see what this beer has to offer! It’s pouring a slightly hazy pale golden colored body with a big white head. It smells like a pilsner alright, but without the hops. Most pilsners tend to not be that hoppy anyway, so in a blind ’smell-test’ (?!) I probably wouldn’t be able to tell that it was a 100% malt bill. The taste is round and soft. You get the pilsner malts but that’s it. It’s not that crisp either. It reminds me of a hefeweizen. That sweet, silky, soft newborn kittens type of mouthfeel – if that’s a thing... I really do miss the hops, but for what it is it’s pretty nicely put together. I’ve had malt beers that was just so intensely sugary and sweet, but this definitely has some other almost wheaty qualities to it. I’m definitely not a fan of this style of beer, but I can’t help but give credit where it’s due. It’s one if the best 100% malt pilsners I’ve had – but it doesn’t score high in my sense of taste. Thanks for the beer bro.

Worlds better than the Efes Xtra I choked back, but that’s setting a pretty low bar. Some malt aroma and the unfiltered vibe is a nice touch. I’ll see how this stacks against the regular version. Bottle with peel off cap drank in a plastic bag by the Hagia Sofia. Culture....

50 cl. bottle. Cloudy straw-coloured pour with frothy but quickly disappearing white head. Aroma is simply malt and bread along with weak citric notes. It has medium sweetness, light sourness and very light bitterness. It is light-bodied, thin-textured and has a watery mouthfeel. Soft to average carbonation. A short, somewhat sticky but still pleasant finish. Quite a nice Pilsener.
