Ruby red, deep, dark and shimmering in the pint. Head is a tidy, shiny, compact affair that leaves a nice lace - unexpected of a barrel aged beer. Aroma of cola beer, dust, cellar must, Biltong, boiled pork hocks, vanillin, butter. Rich, sweet, treacly malts kick it off with a hint of Vegemite peaking in. Swabbed vinous notes are there but they don’t sit well. Buttery, diacetyl (?) blend, melds well into plenty of ripe, rich, dark stonefruit. Burnt fruit peak. Oddly there is minimal length here. Slick, oily body and low carbonation. Meaty, umami notes develop late into drinking. This is a strange brew but not altogether enticing.
On tap at Archive a Beer Boutique. Rating from December 2013. Black brown in colour with a soft tan head. jonnyguns (1105) - AUSTRALIA - JUL 21, 2013
On tap. Pours a dark brown/ruby with an off white head. Can smell the cognac barrels straight away. Am also getting some sweetness and nutty malt tones. Very smooth on the taste, very well balanced and the cognac barrel ageing really adds something to this beer. maneliquor (3514) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUL 16, 2013
Tap at Mane Liquor on the Blind Tasting Barrel Aged Beer Night. Pours very dark brown with a rich, sticky light tan head leaving good lacing and great retention. Nose shows the barrel perfectly. Envelopes your senses in sweet vanilla and milk chocolate, some green apples in there work very nicely with the typical Bull nutty undertones. The vanilla is big in this beer without being too sweet or overpowering. Drinks amazingly. Silky smooth chocolate and vanilla go hand in hand with each other. The roast and underlying nut driven tones - almost soy like balance the sweetness very well. Light hoppy bitterness on the finish. Very well crafted beer. The barrel has come out in perfection here. Wish it were in bottles so I could chuck some aside. Probably my favourite of the night
