Bottle from Purvis Cellars (Sept 2014). Dark oily black, thick, frothy cream coloured head, very dry bitterness, like charcoal, piney hops, resinous bitterness, long mouth-drying finish. Nice. stevoj (6047) - Boise, Idaho, USA - APR 4, 2015
Nice crisp and sharp bitterness throughout. Pours out inky black with spare beige head. Hops present in both aroma and taste, clean finish. mR_fr0g (14430) - Hertfordshire, ENGLAND - OCT 14, 2014
Bottle share for Colin’s 40th. Caramel brown coloured pour with a loose greyish cream head. Aroma is pork sandwich and gravy, nutty, smoke and pine. Flavour is nutty, light toffee, pine needles, light earthy citrus. Palate is semi resin, tangy berry, pine. Meh. Not the best black IPA I’ve ever had. UPDATED: OCT 21, 2017 Black pour and a decent, dense light tan head. Citrus, floral, a little malt, nice tropical fruit - very fresh smelling. Pine, black coffee, sweetish, fruity, flavours, and nice long coffee and pine finish. Cracking good beer
Re-rated side by side with a bunch of other local Black IPAs 20/10/17, good aggressive bitterness compared to most of the others, still like this a lot TourDeBeer (123) - your mummas pants, AUSTRALIA - JUL 24, 2014
bottle from a mate, aroma of pine, citrus and floral. good head retention, pleasing to this eye. the top half of the head is a off white but the rest is closer to a light brown. taste medium sweetness and bitters, long bitter after taste( a good minute). Just realised this was 6%. wouldn’t pick it. cloud puffy like carbonation. Necrobrew (8) - AUSTRALIA - JUN 18, 2014 does not count
Complex and not as balanced as some other black IPA’s but left an amazing after taste. maneliquor (3514) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - JUN 6, 2014
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours very dark brown with a sticky khaki head. Nose is like smelling weedy fresh hop flowers - so herbal and citric with massive punchy tropical fruits in pineapple (fuckin huge pineapple), lychee and mango. Taste is huge grass and pine with bitter coffee and smooth milk chocolate finishing it off. Loads of bright fruits give it some sweetness in the middle which works nicely. Leaves a lingering mango note with more herbs. Dank at it’s best. God damn this must be one fresh mother fucker. Love it WhiskyBraj (13) - British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 4, 2014
Bottle from Mane Liquor.
Pours black with an impressive caramel head. Pine needles driven by grapefruit and slight molasses nose finishing quite roasted.
Those pine needles come back and vanilla joins it. A little woody to note.
Chocolate hits and then disappears only to reappear after swallowing it down. However both the hop hit and the chocolate notes never seem to meld, they’re just too segregated. Almost like nosing an IPA, drinking a porter then swilling the two together. Good value none the less and a good Australian effort at a BIPA.
