A deep dark stout with a thick creamy brown head. In aroma, sweet caramel chocolate malt with light coffee notes, vanilla extract, licorice, alcohol warmth and musty character. In mouth, a sweet fruity chocolate malt with coffee grind, coffee crisp chocolate bar, vanilla extract, pleasant and smooth. Bottle from 2011.

My Bottom Line:
This brash Imperial Stout’s fruity, tart edges clash with assertive roasted malts, leading to an unrefined bitterness where green Québécois malts, leafy hops and more roastiness battle for supremacy.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-There is plenty of foam to cover the pure blackness.
-The mouthfeel is pleasant, but a tad overcarbonated for the level of residual sugars and intensity of the finish. A mineral twang appears in the finish, perhaps because of this exuberant carbonation.
-The body is healthy; not too sweet, not too thin.
-Vinous, fruity angles disagree with the prevalent roastiness.
-The grain bill lacks smoothness to really make this enjoyable. Don’t know if Québécois barley malt is the culprit, but it sure tends to give that effect to a lot of brews...

pours pitch black with a long lasting dark beige head, excellent retention and lacing. roastiness, coffee, woodiness, layered in vanilla, raisins. average carbonation, full body, nice bitter coffee and grapefruit finish, medium long finish. nice brew.

(Rating #3657)

Bottle : Poured a deep black color stout with a quite large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light lactose notes with dry roasted malt and herbal hops. Taste is a weird mix between some roasted malt with notes of herbal hops and light residual sugar notes as well. Body is about average with good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Not bad but hops presence doesn’t really balance with the rest of the taste.

The beige head that thrones over the tranquil opaque black liquid is ultra dense, consisting of thousand of tiny bubbles that stick to one another as well as the glass. Green raw coffee beans with herbal, slightly vegetal hops act as nuances in this roasted malt forward nose. In mouth, it seems a bit more complex, initially coating the mouth with dark chocolate flavours and quickly evolving more towards a more acidic nature that evolves into a green, herbal and grapey, blackberry-like fruity/spicy mix that is perhaps not the best match for the roast. Meanwhile, the tight small bubbled, very active carbonation for the style thins out the otherwise thick palate and bring unecessary carbonic acid onto the palate. I like a more vinous and acidic stout if its focuses on fruit and complexity with subtle roast, but the roast here remains at the forefront while the fruitiness never is very deep at all. it makes for an almost astringent, toothpastey finish that remains very green. I also don’t see age as a factor that could be of any help for flavour integration. I’d prefer it with some tweaks on the malt bill and spicy/herbal Bravo hops kinda accentuate the points I don’t dig.

As Hopkins Stout Imperial. Poured deep dark brown with a frothy beige head. Aroma of roast malt, sweet berries, light chocolate. Medium body, flavour of the aroma, latte. A bit light bodied for the style.
