"Garún is named for the strong and brave heroine of one of Iceland’s most popular folktales "The deacon of Dark River (Myrká)." A tale of ghosts, undying love, and life triumphing over death told against the backdrop of elements essential to Iceland’s character: ice, snow, and flooding waters whirling dark and mysterious. The same elements that inspire this rich, intense, bold and swirlingly varied Icelandic stout. Garún is a dark aura of intense richness and haunting aroma with notes of chocolate, licorice and coffee. Skál!"

Aroma is malty, with notes of sweet chocolate and strong alcohol. Body is pitch black with a thin tan head. Initial taste is malty with light carbonation. Finishes with a mixture of licorice and chocolate that lingers with a slightly bitter alcohol.

Not strong aroma, slight chocolate, malt, alcohol. Black liquid with small head. Taste is burnt bread, sweet malt. Bitterness of alcohol for aftertaste. Medium sweet, medium bitterness. Didn’t found licorice or coffee. Did found chocolate and rye. Overall very good beer. Balanced.

Appearance: opaque black with no relief, one finger of rocky beige head diminishing gradually to a thin ring, no lacing. (3/5) Aroma: molasses, liquorice, chocolate, coffee. (7/10) Taste: moderate-high sweet, moderate bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium-full slightly oily body, moderate carbonation, medium bitter and warming finish. (4/5) Slightly simplistic, on both the nose and the tongue, but pleasant. Molasses leads the way initially, fading slightly to a more liquorice-like note, with hints of chocolate and coffee in the finish. Y’know, I like Iceland, always have. I could see myself living in Iceland (except if I were going to go through the aggravation of uprooting and moving, it wouldn’t be to somewhere with basically the same weather as Newfoundland). That being said, what business does some Icelandic legend have, being on the label of this beer? I always figure if there’s some pretty legend on the label, it’s because they couldn’t think of anything to say about the beer. It might not be as big a warning flag as “Premium” - but, dammit, it’s close. Still and all, I like this. (14/20)

Visual: (cellared for 1 year). Pours jet black, barely any head, a super thin ringed retention, a few small islands and a few bubbles here and there.

Nose: sweet dense roasty-toasty barley malt, molasses, light coffee. (lvl-5)-pungency

Attack: much thicker viscosity, trace tingly-fizzy

Mid-palate: background subdued tangy alcohol, chocolate, (lvl-6-sweetness), liquid roasted barley, intermixed coffee notes, subtle sweet licorice,

Finish: residual chocolate barley malt

Summary: Wow, drinks a lot smoother than a 11.5% should. It goes down easy but I feel it’s missing some pop to make it really stand out.
