COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Traditional winter seasonals are warm and comforting - not this Penguin. Diving in at around 10 percent alcohol by volume, Killer Penguin uses over twice the malt as other winter beers, and is aged for over 6 months to perfect the condition and flavor of this barleywine style ale. This beer doesn't ferment, it hibernates, and wakes up with an attitude.

03-May-10 (22-oz bottle: Purchased 30-Dec-09 for $8.16 at www.liquidsolutions.net)
With barley wines being one of my favorite styles, I’m always excited to try a new one, but that makes it even more disappointing when something like this hits my palate. This barley wine is extraordinarily floral, perfumy, sugary, and fruity, with some grassy hops in the mix, but it is seriously lacking malty richness. Heavy caramely malt flavor in the entry, but the finish descends into a bath of sugary perfume and bitter grain huskiness. Light to moderate carbonation and medium-full in body, though the weight seems sugary rather than malty. The nose offers a bit richer malt character with a touch of earthiness, and as a result, the perfumy and floral hoppiness is somewhat tempered, but alcohol fumes are also apparent. Clear in appearance and amber in color, with a pretty, off-white head initially occupying the top inch of the glass before gradually settling to a filmy layer. Definitely not my style of barley wine.

Dark amber with dark orange hues light boozed head. Big aged tones on the nose of caramel, light oak, light vanilla with just a hint of alcohol. Flavors rounded out aged caramel, toast, nut, hint of alcohol. Light to medium sweetness. Light astringent aftertaste. Not very complex but the flavors are decently aged. This bottle was done in 2015 (its 2017 now).

Pours a clear orangeish brown with tan head. Nose is caramel and maybe some vanilla. There is just a hint of alcohol. The nose isn’t the most bold aroma I’ve experienced. Taste is vaguely sweet malt, toffee and just a hint of muddled stone fruit. Light bodied with moderate carbonation. This is blandly unobjectionable.

Pours a crystal clear copper color, with white head. Aroma is malty and complex. Taste is deep and rich, lots of malt with notes of alcohol, and fruits. This is a good barley wine, thumbs up.

Bottle. Caramel with nice head. Smells like bread, cotton candy, honey, perfume. Heavy on the malt, very sweet with some bitterness to back it up but not a lot.

BB backlog, bottle shared with Joe and Meghan. Pours an amber orange with minimal sized head and not much lacing to notes. Smell and taste are booze, wood, sweet fruit, toffee, and other traditional barley wine notes.

Tap @ Denver Airport: Clear brown with a small off-white ring head. Way to thin and malty to even be considered a solid BW. Meh. Disappointed that I wasted my hard earned money on this penguin poo.

22oz bottle pours out a orangish amber topped with a sand head. Nose is big caramel malt sweetness some citrus and pit fruit. Taste is more of the nice rich caramel malts well balanced sweetness and a light hop.

Gluepot (712) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JUL 22, 2016
A big, light tan head with solid lacing on a dense, unfiltered orange/brown body. Taste profile starts with a nice boozy warmth with rich toffee, roasted malt and dark berries. Candied fruit and fresh hops boost and add to the flavour. The body is dense and rich. A slight syrupiness is well balanced by solid effervescence. A hint of sourness? My kind of barley wine.

Bottle from Beers and Cheers. Dark red amber body with medium head. Nose is sweet, caramel, spicy. Taste is caramel, toffee, anice, malts. Nice prickly texture. Smooth finish.
