Boulevard / Pretty Things Collaboration No. 3 Stingo

RATINGS: 224   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.55/5   SEASONAL: Special   IBU: 35   EST. CALORIES: 255   ABV: 8.5%
Collaboration #3 Stingo was brewed using traditional English ingredients. A variety of ale and specialty malts from Yorkshire are at the forefront; their pronounced roasty aroma and flavor contain hints of toffee, cocoa and bread crust. English hop varieties contribute subtle herbal, peppery qualities. The beer was brewed in batches; some was fermented on oak, some was fermented normally, and some was allowed to sour in the mash tun before being transferred to a fermenter. Boulevard’s brewers, along with Dann and Martha Paquette of Pretty Things Beer & Ale Project, then blended the batches until desired levels of wood and tartness were achieved for the final product. Aroma Roasted and caramelized malts, toffee, wood, cocoa, banana, almond, mocha, brown sugar, bread crust Malt Roast, burnt, toasty, bready, rich, toasted sweet caramel Hops Subtle herbal and peppery Balance Malt Body Medium; malty body offset by acidity

Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of roast malt, spice, malt and hops. Medium body with flavors of caramel malt, banana, spice and mild earthy hops. The finish is fruity with a grainy malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Bottle share at CBC Islington as ’Boulevard Stingo’. Many thanks to Leighton for this one. Very dark reddy brown, small foamy tan head. Aroma is apple, banana split, banana sweets. Body is smooth, soft carbonation, slightly foamy. Taste is soft banana ester, varnish, resin, salty, spicy finish with more resin. A unique take on the style. The light woody and sour aspects integrate well.

Craft Islington bottleshare. Thanks to Leighton. Hazy deep amber beer, tidy cream colour head. Palate is light and dry with decent fine carbonation. Airy malts, a little cream. Tangy fruits. Spicy bubblegum esters. Tangy fruity finish. If this is a tribute to Sam Smith Stingo, well it’;s a nice thought but not a patch on that beer.

Bottle shared in London - bought in the US. Pours unclear brown with a frothy, tan head. The nose has some ripe berries, very faint tang, wood, earth, toffee. Medium sweet flavour with notes of caramel, low bitterness, cocoa, grapes. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming on the finish with further toffee, ripening and lightly tangy berries, suggestions of oxidation, wood, earth, subtle leafy hops. Good stuff overall.

750ml corked and caged bottle (Courtesy of Headbanger) poured into an English Pint at 40°. Color is a deep dark and murky brown with light carbonation and a thin tight off white head. Aroma is chocolate and dark fruit with a slight note of alcohol in the back. It has a medium body with a rich and creamy mouth feel. Flavor is roasted with toffee and brown sugar then a hint of dark fruit, hop spice and a mild bitterness. After taste is dry and a bit tart as the bitterness stands out a little, some chocolate, more spice and a hint of oak all show. Overall this is a great brew, tasty and very complex.
