Our ESB will fall along the more traditional lines of the style with a nice balance of English malt character with spicy/earthy English hops. Although referred to as a bitter, ESBs arent necessarily that bitter. You can think of them as a quaffable English pale ale. I talked with brewer Matt Hecke about the teams intentions behind the ESB and heres what he had to say: As of late a lot of our newly released beers have been more hop forward or extreme in their own ways. We wanted to show that a traditional style ale can hang with the best of our beers. We specifically chose to make an ESB because it isnt very common, but still traditional in nature. Its a good opportunity to showcase our knowledge of brewing past and present.

Smells bready, malty, a little weak. Dark copper color with an enormous white head. Tastes hoppy like a pale ale without the bitter aftertaste. Good slick palate. Enjoyable, not bitter like the title suggests.

UPDATED: DEC 8, 2014 This strikes me as rather American in hop character for a beer billed as an ESB--not that that is a bad thing one way or the other. This is a cloudy orange brew. Its head is short lived and leaves a nice lattice of lacing as it dissipates. The nose here is pretty mild w/ some nutty malt layered underneath lemon zest and floral notes from the hops. This is a medium to full bodied beer w/ a touch of sweetness and mild carbonation which seems to suit the style. Overall, this is a real nice beer. I got it in a mixed twelve two months before its expiration date which unfortunately means it is probably quite old so kudos to Boulevard for good bottling practices because this was still good.

Clear golden orange color with orange-hued tan head. Lemony, astringent aroma. The flavor is pretty much the same, with a touch of caramel and grainy toastyness. Medium to thin body. Not as intense as other ESBs.

Hazy golden brew that has little head that dies out fast. Smells of herbal tea. Taste is pretty good. Has a slight maltiness with enough hops to give it a slight hop bite to it. Bitter but without going overboard. Easy drinking brew that could be a chug beer. Whole lot better than that other Tasting Room sink pour brew that came in this sampler.

The color of this beer is a slightly hazy orange with a small white head that fades quickly, and the aroma blends earthy hops and toasted caramel malts. The taste is mildly bitter and slightly sour with an aftertaste thats more malty than hoppy. The palate has a slick texture, medium-light body, and soft carbonation
