Boulevard / Sierra Nevada Terra Incognita (Batch 1 & 2)

RATINGS: 323   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.58/5   SEASONAL: Special   EST. CALORIES: 255   ABV: 8.5%
Situated at opposite ends of the California Trail, pioneering breweries Sierra Nevada and Boulevard have embarked upon a journey into the unknown, to a land where adventures in brewing and flavor await. Terra Incognita is, fittingly, an earthy beer, celebrating the unique terroir of the two locations. Beginning with Sierra Nevadas estate-grown pale malt, and combined with amber malt, wheat, and malted wheat, it is then assertively hopped with Bravo and Styrian Goldings, dry-hopped with East Kent Goldings, and finally barrel aged with Brettanomyces in Missouri oak.
Originally brewed at Boulevard and released exclusively on draft at SAVOR Fest 2012. Batch 2 was brewed at Boulevard and re-released to the general public in bottles on 6-18-13.

750 c&c from Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown with a 5 finger foamy/frothy tan head. Aroma (through lots of head) is sour and dark. Med + body. Flavor is dark malt, wood and some seriously sour fruit. This is not vinegar sour. Its dark fruit bretty. No cherry here. Apparently no fruit of any kind here, but I guess its the Goldings. When the foam is gone the aroma is quite earthy/sour, and the flavor generates a hint of chocolate - but it finishes earthy/sour. Mouth fatigue means not so sour as the start, but sour. This is a rather elegant ale, and if popular wines were earthy, this would be a fitting alternative. Aint the way of the world. tho.

Pours a deep dark brown with a crazy thick head, not even a vigorous pour and chilled more than it should have been! Everything is complex, aroma has peppery spiciness and pecan pie wrapped in a bready envelope. Flavor is similar, piling on layers of vanilla leather caramel and cola (perhaps an effect of the carbonation), just a bit of funk. Semi-dry and almost salty. Good beer.

Sample from 75 cl. bottle. Dark, amber colour with a thin, white bubbly head. Fruity aroma with spicy hints, bretts and caramel malts. Taste is sweet. Medium body with a creamy texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes dry and fruity/spicy. OK.
