Boulevard Smokestack Series: Grainstorm Black Rye IPA

RATINGS: 331   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.72/5   SEASONAL: Spring   EST. CALORIES: 231   ABV: 7.7%
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

A bit disappointed as usual. I was really hoping this would be one I dug, but Boulevard is overrated and depends on marketing to make the sales vs. actually good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Orange, rye malt, and pine aroma. Dark brown with moderate head. Sweet orange rye malt and moderately bitter spruce flavor. Pretty tasty but would have liked if the rye came out more.

Bottle, shared with Parksy. I’ll begin by looking back on my relationship with Boulevard beers. I haven’t particularly enjoyed any of Boulevard’s regular line up-- not a single one. Their Bully Porter in particular was a miss for me, despite its enormous popularity. The Smokestack series, on the other hand, has been a completely opposite experience; I think I’ve rated every one of them a four or better. So my hopes were high for this beer. Alas, this turned out to be the first "miss" in the series for me. More grainy than hoppy, and with a thinner, gassier mouthfeel than I like, I found this came up short in both the malt and hops department. After loving their Single Wide and Double Wide, I guess I expected bigger things in what I had anticipated to be a black-bodied hop bomb. Not a total failure, but certainly a disappointment.

Pours a deep dark blackish color with light tan head. Light citrusy hop aroma. Smokey up front, some mild roast behind, hop character follows but smoke flavor is dominant. Smoke mellows out after initial taste but still a bit overwhelming

Bottle share thanks to dooface. Straight up garbage chocolate and coffee with obnoxious nasty hops. Upon second visit I get a little bit of vomit and sewer water.

Pours a finger of tan head on a black body. The aroma is a solid burnt wood, molasses, roasted malt and lemon. Nice. The taste is grainy all over, burnt and roasted malt, mild lemon bitterness and finishes with a little honey sweetness. Nice balance. The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation. Very enjoyable. The malt takes a front seat to the hops.

Bottle shared at Oxford tasting Nov ’12. Pours dark rich brown with a nice tan head. Grapefruit and toasted bread aroma. Flavor tends towards malty, with roast flavors carrying the load with a dry hoppy finish. Pretty tasty.

Bottle shared by beerboxer. Pours black with brownish head. Has a rye roasted malt with a good hop balance.
