Corked bottle and served in my GI IPA Tulip: Pours a deep brown with reddish highlights topped by an initial huge frothy head and very good lacework. First test of an Black IPA is to close your eyes and smell it.
Does it smell like an IPA and then does it taste like an IPA? Well outside of some light roast and rye notes this does just that. Juicy fruity hops, hint of hop spice and some lovely overall bitterness. The rye bread like character is really more a slight addition than a major feature. Appearance: Dark ruby color with a nice big frothy tan head.
Aroma: Coffee, chocolate and hoppy.
Palate: Medium to full body. Moderate sweet with a fine bitterness. Rich carbonation.
Taste: Chocolate, coffee, grapefruit hoppy and mild acidic.
Overall impression: Lovely powerful and tasty BIPA.

Big light tan head, dissipating slowly to a skim of foam over a dark, transparent espresso colored beer. Aromas of hops, fruit. Hops, apple caramel, coffee. I think rye gives a hint of spice. Surprising viscosity, not as thick as a stout or porter, but nice. Not much sweetness, but a touch.

Opaque dark brown beer with a pale tan head. Palate is light, semi dry and crisp. Mile minerals. Smooth dark malt with a touch of bitter roast. Little rye spice. Light citric hops bring up the rear and add bitterness. Whisper of malt cream and smoke. Semi dry finish. Pretty drinkable.
Pours black with big traditional boulevard head. Aromas of forest and rye bread. Flavors of some mild bitterness accented well with some roasted malt flavors. Descent bIPA. csaso (2361) - Missouri, USA - OCT 11, 2013
Bottle - huge thick creamy head, almost black color with slight red hues around the edges, big piney fruity hop aroma and flavor with a fair roasty malt aftertaste - really good overall

Fabulous beer? mmmm the penultimate fab beer. Whatever; pretty friggin good brew. In most of my scores it was just a hair under the next up rating. Anyway, poured at a great temperature with giant, foamy, frothy, medium tan head that never settles and a bit’o lace. Aroma is slightly gamey, hops, dark roast malt, weed, dry forest, mustiness. Appearance is a very dark but clear cherry garnet with a few bubble trails. Flavor’s a slightly sweet acid at the very first and quickly followed by bitter and the resin & citrus flavors . Bottle shared, poured alight brown color with aromas of rye, chocolate, spice, light citrus, and some roasted malt. Flavors follow suit, chocolate, roast, pine, citrusy hops, and a light spice in the aftertaste.
