COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

Bottle: Pours a very dark brown with a medium frothy tan head that is fully lasting. Sweet malty aroma has a burst of rye and pine with grain notes. Malty flavor is sweet and roasty with hints of grapefruit and fruit notes. Has a creamy texture with a spicy mouthfeel and a mild bitterness in the finish. Delicious!

Serving: 750 ml. bottle from State Line Liquors. It pours a very dark brown with a frothy tan head. The nose jumps right out at you with notes of rye, slight resin and citrus notes, and a little toasted malt. The taste is a nice blend of the various malts with a bit of pine and grapefruit rind to even out the slightly roasted sweetness. Medium to full body with average carbonation. A deliciously different brew.

20130528 750ml bottle from Honeygo. Cola brown, mostly clear, with massive tan head that clings and clumps on the glass. Lovely stuff. Aroma is muted piney hops and slight curacao with mild grassiness and hay above more subtle caramel and burnt toast, maybe some green apple, ginger. Palate is generally dry but muddled on the back end with some stickiness coming on. Not at all sweet tasting and even a bit astringent with a definitely lasting and palate scorching resinous note. I bet a few months ago this would have been unremarkable, but right now it’s a pretty intense beer; more than expected, for sure.

Pours a solid black with a foamy tan head and lots of lacing. The aroma has some earthy, slightly piney hops, along with some roasted malt and a small amount of coffee. The flavor is roasted and dark malts up front with an earthy hop background leading to a balanced middle and finish over a slightly spicy but smooth mouthfeel over a medium body.

Bottle from Systembolaget enjoyed at home
Pours quite dark, black in glass, huge tanned head. Smells of citrus, peach, zests and hints of roast. Medium sweet, roast and toast, some fruityness, citrus and zests. Heavy bitter, resins and zests. A very nice black ipa, balanced on the right side, the hops plays first violin and the dark malts just fill in where they’re needed. I like it very much; one of the best Boulevard’s i’ve tried

Bottle at Carneys: pours dark brown, dense khaki head that persists forever. Nose is resinous hops, pine, rye, some grain, a slight citrus hop presence as well. Chocolate malts and resin hop bitterness adding complexity on a nice, full palate. Grew on me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Location: 750 ml bottle from State Line, 5/13/13

Aroma: The aroma has some grapefruit and pine hops, roasted malts, and toasted rye bread
Appearance: Pours a dark brown color with a foamy brown head and some drippy lace
Flavor: Tastes lightly sweet, with lots of roasted/toasted rye mats, and a medium bitter hoppiness
Palate: The body is medium-plus, it has average carbonation, and a dry, tingly finish
Overall Impression: This is a tasty Black IPA, or Cascadian Dark, or whatever you want to call it. I enjoyed it. The rye component works well in this one. I found it to be both drinkable and on style.

On tap at Sam’s, Durham. Thanks also to hopsleeroy for splitting a bottle at the Omani Feast Day! Not on record as being a hater of this style, though it certainly has never inspired *too* much enthusiasm. This one was pretty damn tasty though. Espresso with lemon peel in the nose, bitter hops and fruit that knows its place. Nothing ashy or ill-considered in the taste, a genuine hop bomb with meaningful dark accompaniment: toasted malts, mild rye spice, and a lengthy bitter finish.

Nice citrus and roasted malt. Amazing balance between sweet roasted malts and piney citrus hops. Finish is nice bitterness
