Boulevard Smokestack Series: Grainstorm Black Rye IPA

RATINGS: 337   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.72/5   SEASONAL: Spring   EST. CALORIES: 231   ABV: 7.7%
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, bottled in 3/2013. Pours clear very dark brown color with a nice 2 finger dense light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, orange zest, orange rind, tangerine, floral, pine, grass, toast, spicy rye, light roasted malt, and floral earthiness. Very nice aromas with big presence of citrus hop notes with some moderate malt presence. Taste of grapefruit, orange zest, orange rind, lemon zest, tangerine, floral, pine, grass, toast, roasted malt, spicy rye, and floral earthiness. Moderate floral pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, citrus zest, pine, floral, toast, spicy rye, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of citrus hop flavors; with a moderate roast/rye malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a moderately creamy, crisp, and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice black IPA. Nice balance of hop complexity and malt; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Aged 750 ml bottle to snifter (thanks DrSilverworm). Looks solid; a cloudy brown with beige lacing. Smells solid too; bitter hops and malt. Tastes like it smells with a nice, smooth mouthfeel. Good beer!

Aroma: Smelling of bread, pine, resin and soap.
Appearance: A clouded black colored beer. A tan head with good lacing and good curtains.
Taste: Tasting sweet dark bread, pine and grape-fruit peel. Some licorice.
Palate: Low carbonation, a soft texture. A good body with a long dry finish.
Overall: A clever BIPA, smells IPA, tastes half stout, half IPA.
Note: Bottle 650 ml at a De Klomp tasting. Reviewed 2013-04-20.

750ml bottle, caged & corked. Black pour, tan foam. Aroma of west coast hops. Roasted grains, citrus, and pine. Toasted malt, burnt grains. Huge hops bite, harsh sharp bitterness, pine citrus. Finishes with a fruity grain character, mixed berry notes, lingering hops. A great Black IPA. (3673)

Bottle @ home. Pours clear black with a large, frothy light tan head. Long retention with good lacing. Aroma is earthy rye and spicy wheat with herbal, dank, and minty hops, roast and nutty malt with prunes and raisins. Flavor is heavy hops and bitterness with supporting dark malt and dark dried fruits, lightly tannic with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation.

Deep brown black chocolate with a decent head. Grainstom masterfully executes on the Black IPA base beer, but then takes it a step or two further with a twitch of rye and a shake of oats for an explosion of juicy piney hop forest and smooth roasty aromas and flavors. The oats impart a wonderful depth and added complexity. It’s been a while since I’ve met a beer that has been at once so delicious and taste-forward, yet so sessionable, that I will be longing to refill my growler with Grainstorm, long after the last drops have been enjoyed.

Pour is a black with a huge tan head. Aroma is hoppy with a nice dark malt and spicy rye. Flavor is even better. Big creamy dark malt mouthfeel with a decent hop in the backround. Finish is where you get the rye used along with a nice roasted malt. This was a fine example of a black IPA.
