COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

Bottle at Rocketcity Brewfest. Brown/black with medium tan head. Aroma of resinous hops and roasted malts. Medium body, resinous hop bitterness without much roasted malt on the flavor. More of an IPA than BIPA.

On tap at Tapwerks. Pours a near black with a creamy brown head that dissipates to the edges and laces. Aroma has notes of light dark grains with some earthy pine and a hint of rye and roasted malts backing. Flavor is similar with a bit of dark grains, rye, roasted malts backed by earthy pine.

brokensail (16633) - Dublin, California, USA - MAY 14, 2014
On tap @ Haven Gastropub. Dark brown in color with a tall khaki head. Roasted malt, hints of coffee, and lots of piney hops on the nose. Hints of honeydew, orange peel, and herbs. A little bit of a grass and pine bitterness to the flavor. Lots of roast and herbs, too. Citrus peel, melon, and a bit of burnt sugar sweetness. Not bad.

Shared 750 ml. bottle, poured to snifters showing a cloudy, dirty brown hue, with persistent, frothy, light tan head foam, and waves & spots of clingy lacing. The aroma was subtle, with mellow roast, dankness & grain, light spice, and malty creaminess. The taste was malty, along with notable, dry & earthy bitterness, and lively carbonation that gave some false sense of heft to the body, which I perceived as light to medium. Have enjoyed better style examples, and didn’t really wow me.

nearbeer (5563) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - MAY 1, 2014
Couple of 12 oz. on tap at Alewife. Black with a lasting ring of creamy foam. Big nose of spicy citrus, toast and a touch of mocha. Tastes of fresh orange and grapefruit, caramel, spicy dark bread, resin and a touch of coffee and chocolate. Medium body is smooth with medium carbonation and has a very nice balance and drinkability.

Pours a deep black with a very hefty, tan creamy head that remains elevated. Aroma nose has a lot of grapefruit and orange citrus from the hops followed by mild rye notes, toasted barley and light roasted malt bitterness. Flavor starts with a lot of grapefruit/orange citrus, light pine notes from the hops but this quickly becomes a bitterness that combines very smoothly with the caramel sweet, light rye spice and smooth toasted malt note that comes late. The body is very nice with a modest/hefty feeling, lots of residual sugar, light/modest alcohol warmth and modest amount of carbonation to deliver the aroma. Overall a really well crafted brew. Well balanced, smooth, creamy and a great paring between the hops fruity/bitter flavors and the malt sweetness.
