COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

750 ml. Deep brown body with ruby highlights. Huge frothy beige head, slowly diminishing. Aroma of citrus, orange, grapefruit, roasted malts, rye. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Light acidity. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Not a big fan of black IPAs, but this one works. Light dark roast character lets hop flavors come through. Sweet orange juice, grapefruit and light resin.

750ml bottle. Aroma of roasty, toasted grains, pumpernickel bread, mild chocolate and faint dark sweetness, along with a lightly citric, fresh, fruity hop profile. Deep, dark brown in color, nearly black, with a hugely frothy, lasting, ivory head and gobs of lacing as well. Flavor begins with a mild dosage of hop bitterness, this increasing as it mingles with the toasty, grainy, very gently sweet, dark malts and spicy, fruity rye, and finishing with a blend of dark chocolate, citrus, faint pine and fading peppery notes late. Plenty of fine effervescence on the palate, with a dry and lightly resinous feel, body is medium-full. An interesting and rather subtle take on the style -- does not possess overwhelming bitterness or any truly massive, powerful qualities, seeming to aim for drinkability above all that.

Pours black with a tall tan head. Aroma is roast and cascade hops. Flavor follows and is very bitter. Some wheat evident. I'm bit a fan of black IPAs but this one is good.

Draft sample. Black in colour with medium carbonation. Classic C-hops upfront in the nose, along with cut grass and toasted and roasted malts. Malt notes come through much stronger in the mouth, with both pale malt and spicy rye playing a strong roll. Some white grapefruit notes on the back end. Slick on the palate, but with a solid amount of bitterness. Good overall.

20130528 750ml bottle from Honeygo. Cola brown, mostly clear, with massive tan head that clings and clumps on the glass. Lovely stuff. Aroma is muted piney hops and slight curacao with mild grassiness and hay above more subtle caramel and burnt toast, maybe some green apple, ginger. Palate is generally dry but muddled on the back end with some stickiness coming on. Not at all sweet tasting and even a bit astringent with a definitely lasting and palate scorching resinous note. I bet a few months ago this would have been unremarkable, but right now it’s a pretty intense beer; more than expected, for sure.

Pours dark ruby with a huge frothy tanned head. Aroma is spicy malts and hops, herbal and fruity hops. Taste is light sweet, chocolate, spritzy mouthfeel, mineralic bitter, some salt, liquorice and light roast, lingering bitter.

savnac (2656) - Anchorage, Alaska, USA - APR 3, 2013
750ml bottle. Dark brown with a big foamy head. Aroma of cocoa, pine, citrus, rye and coffee. Flavor is dry cocoa, bitter hops, light roasty ash and no alcohol. Medium body with a long, dry, bitter finish. Really nice Black IPA, lots of dry cocoa, hops and very well balanced. Only problem is the price on this, $15.

Fatehunter (2641) - Corbett, Oregon, USA - DEC 8, 2013
Pours a finger of tan head on a black body. The aroma is a solid burnt wood, molasses, roasted malt and lemon. Nice. The taste is grainy all over, burnt and roasted malt, mild lemon bitterness and finishes with a little honey sweetness. Nice balance. The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation. Very enjoyable. The malt takes a front seat to the hops.

6/24/2014. 750 ml. corked and caged bottle. Dark brown color with a tan head. Pine, citrus and roasted malt aromas. Bitter right off with lots of malt, spice and hop flavors.
