Like India Pale Ale, the classic Imperial Stouts were originally brewed with high levels of alcohol and hops to withstand the rigors of a long sea journey, not to India but to Imperial Russia and the Baltic States. Our version is an over-the-top riff on the style, with a huge grain bill featuring several kinds of malted barley, wheat, rye, oats, and spelt. Robust grain and coffee flavors are counterbalanced by date and plum notes from the Scottish yeast. To add extra complexity and depth, this Imperial Stout is made up of a blend of freshly brewed beer and several barrel-aged beers, carefully balanced. Za Vas!

Pours black with a small mocha head. Aroma of chocolate, whiskey and smoked malts. Taste is pretty much the same, but the alchohol really comes out as it warms. A bit of a tart note also. Might be better with age when the alchohol mellows.

2014 vintage. First 2017 rating. Pours with a majestic, super-fine, chocolate milk colored head that lingers forever. Nose is booze, toffee, coffee, some esters. Smooth and creamy on the palate, alcohol is hidden extremely well. Lots of whiskey barrel flavor, vanilla, roasted malt, brown sugar. Only a hint of alcohol at the very end. A little on the sweet side for me.

Quite excellent in nearly every way! I could drink this one regularly, no problem at all. It is a beautiful glass of stout and the high ABV is unrecognizable unless one sees it noted on the bottle...very smooth.

Corked bottle from Steamworks Liquor Store, Vancouver; vintage 2014, batch I14297-2, bb 10-2016, 2 years old
Pitch black color, brownish creamy head. Aroma of dark malts, chocolate and coffee, in harmony. As I get rid of some carbonation and it gets warmer, the body gets stronger; very good dark chocolate flavor, with roasted nuts and a roasted malt component that doesnt overwhelm the others.

APPEARANCE- super black, light head. NOSE- raspberries! Surprisingly fruity for only being aged in whiskey barrels. FLAVOR- super roasty. Delicious. Most of the sip tastes like an amazing stout, sans whiskey. Slight whiskey burn at the end of the sip.

Cellared 2015 bottle with a Sept. 2017 BB date stamp; opened September 2016. Served in a Belgian snifter. Appearance: essentially black and opaque body with a semi-durable light tan head. Aroma: whisky and whisky barrels; black bread; alcohol; dark dried fruits; hints of vanilla. Flavor: bourbon and oak; molasses; less dark dried fruits and more chocolate than in the nose. Hints of vanilla, brown sugar and black bread. Lightly sweet, overall. Mouthfeel: very full, relatively thick body with alcohol warmth extending from the tongue downwards. Overall: quite nice but likely to improve with further aging.

Flaska frn SB. 2014 vintage. En relativt st IS med mrkt socker, choklad, fudge, vanilj, torkad frukt och till det en ganska frsiktig men ocks hyfsat komplex fatkaraktr med lite bourbon och fruktig whisky. Mycket gott och lttsippat.

A "one of a kind" when it comes to Imperial Stouts. Im having troubles pinpointing exactly why that is, but I think a lot has to do with different types of barrel aging. I sense a lot of bourbon in this, and it makes it a really smooth drink. Sweet, with a slightly bitter, warming finish. Well balanced, not pitch black with heavy roasted malt and chocolate that you often find in this style of ale. Medium-low carbonation makes the palate really nice as well. Complex and awesome!
