Lately it occurs to us that if, back in 1989, you planned on starting a brewery in the back of your carpentry shop, youd have been wise to seek out someone like Harold "Trip" Hogue. A collector of ancient Volvos, Trip was well-qualified for the make-do engineering required to coax recalcitrant equipment out of retirement and onto making the first Boulevard beers.

The Tripel style originated in the Trappist brewery of Westmalle Abbey in pre-war Antwerp province. Its numeric moniker results from the old Belgian practice of naming beers based on the amount of malt used in the brew. A "Simple" was the lightest-bodied brew. Doubling the malt bill resulted in a "Dubbel", while a "Tripel" contained three times the amount of malt (and, as a result, three times the amount of alcohol.) True to style, our Long Strange Tripel is a golden ale with estery aromas, a dense, creamy head and a sweet finish.

Location/Date:Bottle split Dave on October 26th, 2012.

Appearance:Pours a nice gold cloud with light white head.
Aroma:Aroma of yeast, wheat.
Taste:Nice amount of wheat, yeast, faint hint of sour, sweet on the end..
Palate:Medium light body.

Summary: Really nice Abbey Tripel that Id be glad to drink again. Enjoy the name too, a tip of the cap to The Dead. Boulevard continues to impress me when Im not drinking their popular wheat - but hey, that helps pay for other experiments.

Appearance: hazy pale amber with two fat fingers of rocky ivory head, excellent retention and thick lacing. (4/5) Aroma: caramel malt, boozy dark fruit, apples and pears, banana. (7/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderate-low bitter. (7/10) Palate: medium body, lively carbonation, sweet slightly boozy warming finish. (4/5) Whoa! An explosive uncorking caught me by surprise, but didnt follow with the expected gusher. (And before we go any further: Im sorry, but does anybody else whos graduated high school and endured a valedictorian speech find long strange trip to be an unbearable clich? Because I sure do.) Anyway. This was a bit of a gamble on my part: on the one hand, it was a year past its best-before. On the other, it was a high-ABV Boulevard Smokestack. I decided it was worth the risk. I have no regrets. I prefer a bone-dry Tripel, and this one tends sweet, but it still has decent Belgian character. Given the complete lack of hop character and the high ABV, I can say with a fair degree of certainty that this will keep forever, BB dates be damned. It might not be a home run, but its at least a triple. (15/20)

Aroma is citrus, tart, sulphur, plum, raisins and candy sugar. Taste is rich sweet malts, dark sugar, dark fruits, caramel and fig. Very light tartiness on tip , just enough to add character. Appearance is a slightly hazy gold with a frothy pearl head that retains quite well.
