COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Ryes body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

750 ml. bottle. Served in a snifter. Pours a caramel color with quite a bit of protein sediment. Aroma of whiskey, wood, and a slight sour quality. Flavors of caramel, whiskey, and wood. A slight burn on the finish but enough sweetness to balance it. Very unique. An absolutely fantastic beer.

750ml from Sams, Durham. Another well done and reasonably priced brew from the Smokestack series. Nice lustrous copper with with a rocky head. Strong caramel and rye in the nose, sweet and boozy with some fruit, dry hops, and oak wafting out. Flavors are intensely sweet and rich, and if not in the mood for a beer like this I can imagine being overwhelmed. But for what it is, its a nice well-done beer.

2013 bomber to a snifter. Pours an amber, orange color with very little head. Smell is rye with a little caramel like sweetness and maybe a hint of sourness. Taste is a caramel/toffee sweetness with a bit of rye and a roasted/charred taste that adds a bitterness. An alcohol taste is also present but is balanced well among the other tastes. A thick almost syrupy mouthfeel that is semi dry with a good dose of alcohol warmth and burn. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A reddish orange ish brown with a little bit of white head. Rye smell dominates, maybe some honey. A spicy, salty carbonated bite at first that gives way to the rye and some sweet, caramel malt. Finishes with some bitter and rye lingers. Dry. Too much of the salty taste. Some char and wood in there too. Not bad overall, could use a little more sweet. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750ml bottle in a snifter. Pours deep ruby/copper with a lacy, cream-colored head. Aroma of rye, whiskey, oak and vanilla, bread and caramel, and some light floral hops. Flavor about the same, with the malt profile a little too sweet for my taste. Smooth texture. A really good beer, but its a lot like rye whiskey and the malts are just a hint too sweet for me.
