COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Why Rye? A fair question, given this assertively flavored grain is more often associated with whiskey than with beer. Even in that arena, it has largely been eclipsed by corn and barley, the sources of bourbon and scotch, respectively. But when we procured some seasoned rye whiskey barrels from our friends at Templeton Rye, we asked ourselves, "Why not?" Why not brew a rich, tawny rye ale, then mellow it in the warmth of charred oak rye whiskey casks? Thus, Rye-on-Rye: a marriage of very similar, yet very different embodiments of this unique, distinctive grain. Two kinds of malted rye provide a spicy sweetness, giving way to notes of caramelized wood and the citrusy tang of Perle, Magnum and Saphir hops before easing into a dry, lingering finish. Rye-on-Rye’s body and character make it the equal to any sort of hearty stew or aged cheese. At the risk of seeming redundant, might we suggest pairing it with a classic pastrami-on rye? A rye beer with a hint of rye whiskey aroma, alongside a rye bread sandwich. Why not?

Draft at Bigwood, 12/6/2012 [6 of 11]. From notes. Aroma: Spiced Templeton rye, sweet oak. Appearance: Amber color, thin ring of off-white head, clings nicely to the glass, good lacing. Taste: Rye whiskey, spice. Some citrusy hops of front, but mostly sweet and spicy. Palate: So so smooth. Nice carbonation & mouthfeel. Overall: Nice. I will happily drink this. Note from Nick: "I’m totally tasting urinal cake." As an aside, once that thought is with you it’s hard to shake it ...

Whiskey aroma and underlying flavor, with woodsy, hint of citrus and even a touch of heat or mild pepper. Nice change of pace for this porter/stout fan. From a bottle in my cellar, a very nice surprise, well made.

Gluepot (737) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 11, 2017
Quite a unique strong ale. A lively off white head on a semi-opaque deep mahogany body. The nose has medium plus prominence, featuring rye grain, rye whiskey and caramel malt. The taste emphasizes spicy rye grain along with the whiskey, oak, vanilla, a solid touch of citrus hops and a hint of mint. The caramel malt is there but less strong than most strong ales. Not too slick or sticky, especially considering the high ABV.

3.2
DocJitsu (2043) - Pensacola, Florida, USA - DEC 12, 2016
Pours a cloudy, dark bourbon brown with a smooth, tan head. Whisky barrel come though in the nose first. Caramel, vanilla, whiskey. Mouthfeel isn’t as robust as expected. Immediately sharp and gets harsh and nearing offensive at the finish. Neither is the flavor. The rye malt Is overpowering. Some faint whiskey, caramel, and vanilla suddenly appears at and after the finish.
