"Do you know what dwells in a glass?" asks Ole, in Hans Christian Andersen’s The Watchman of the Tower. Better known for stories such as The Little Mermaid, Andersen wrote this short, cautionary tale for a somewhat older audience. Our quadrupel ale, also meant for the mature connoisseur, is a deep and mysterious libation, dark auburn and full-bodied, its sweetness deceptive. As Ole describes the glasses in turn, their contents become more ominous until, in the sixth glass...

Another great Smokestack offering. Nice aroma with yeast and bread but not as strong as most Quads. Dark amber color with plenty of particulates floating around. Light head. Smooth palate with a medium weight and pretty easy to drink. I was expecting a little funkiness as the yeast appeared to have gone into the glass but there wasn’t any. Clean flavors of soft and bready malts, grainy as well. Not much of a hops presence and the alcohol was well hidden. A solid effort.

Amber color poured into a stemmed chalice. Lots of yeast "floaties". Fair amount of carbonation. Aroma of plum and dark dried fruits. Medium body with a little hop bitterness. The alcohol is hidden well. Finishes a little sweet.

Old bittkevtl glass. Aroma of wet cardboard and must. Meh. A watery flat kind of taste. Well. This doesn’t hold up well. Decent enough.

A heavy carmel sugar bomb... enjoyable, but perhaps a bit too sweet for me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle @ home. A tad unclear amber-ish color, medium sized off-white to beige head that diminishes fairly quickly. Aroma is malts, caramel, raisins. Taste malts, raisins, some alcohol, somewhat sweet and somewhat [alcoholic] bitter. Meh, overall I could drink this yeah for sure, but I think it's quite a bad "abt/quadrupel" stylewise.

Good off-white head. Excellent lacing. Very Malty; lots of caramel, candy sugar. Very Fruity; dark fruits, raisins, plums. Spicy. Yeasty; lots of floaties. Hoppy; slight balancing hop bitterness. Some warming alcohol. Smooth. Sweet malty, fruity, spicy and yeasty throughout. Nice beer!

Malty alcohol aroma. Light, airy head that dissipates quickly. Sweet, balanced flavor of red fruits. Light-bodied.
