Boulevard Smokestack Series: Grainstorm Black Rye IPA

RATINGS: 331   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.72/5   SEASONAL: Spring   EST. CALORIES: 231   ABV: 7.7%
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

750 ml bottle, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 7.7%. Dark reddish brown colour, huge beige head. Lovely malty aroma, mild roasty notes, hints of dark berries, also fruity and piney hops. The flavour is slightly on the sweet side, with moderate roast malts and fruity and piney hops. Medium bitter finish.

Treated as an imperial version, this was poured into a tulip.
The appearance was a black color with a good finger’s worth of white to off white foamy head that dissipated at a nice pace. Moderate stringy to speckled lace.
The aroma takes in some sweet barley/oatiness rubbing against some spicy rye. Sly blueberries dive in underneath. Roasty coffee beans and some roasted cocoa beans.
The flavor blends the sweetness of the barley to the oatiness and brings the spiciness of the rye to glide in for a really nice balance. Cocoa and coffee portions are there but fairly low. Moderate semi-sweet to roasty balance in the aftertaste leading on into the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a good sipping quality about it. Moderate carbonation feels good on my tongue.
Overall, imperial black IPA hitting all of the right spots and rounding out very nicely. Of course, I’d have this again.

(Bottle) Black colour, with hints of ruby through the light. Frothy beige head, leaving traces of lacing. Malty, hoppy nose with coffee, roasted malt, liquorice, grapefruit, caramel, pine needles, hints of mint and blueberries. Malty, roasted, hoppy taste with notes of coffee, chocolate, blueberries, pine needles, mint, grapefruit, dark bread and a generous piney bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Tasty and well made black IPA with blueberries, mint and piney hops. Very nice.
