COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Just when you thought it was safe to come out of the root cellar, along comes Grainstorm, a big, wet wallop to the senses. Dark clouds gather on the horizon of your glass. A high-pressure system of pungent hops collides with a stationary front of barley, oats, wheat, and rye. The forecast: a monsoon of flavor with surges of roasty malt, microbursts of fruity notes, and a chance of golfball-sized hail. The extended outlook calls for unseasonably pleasant enjoyment.

Scrapersnbeer (1532) - Boston, Massachusetts, USA - SEP 3, 2013
Spicy rye bread, ropey resin and dried grapefruit aroma. Very sinister. Jet black, unstable brown head. Grassy, palate slicing bitter, also burnt sweetness. Slick foamy body, not especially heavy for all its other attributes. A quality brew.

Sampled at GBWF 2013, from my huge backlog. Completed with bottle rating from home.
Dark with a beige head leaving lacing.
Aroma: hoppy and fruity with grapefruit, lemon, peach, spices, roasted.
Taste: Fruity with peach, strawberry, grapefruit, lemon, pine, spices, some chocolate and licorice.
Medium bodied.
Very nice.

750ml bottle poured into my ipa glass. Pours a slightly hazy dark brown color with a thick Khaki head that leaves great lacing. smells of roasted malt, chocolate, pine, grapefruit and rye. Tastes of all the same things in the smell with the rye and oats really prevalent in the back end. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy with great carbonation and a dry finish. I think this is the best black ipa ive had to date. Everything works so well together. Too bad its only a seasonal beer. I’m really liking all Boulevard’s smokestack series beers.

UPDATED: AUG 25, 2013 Dark brown beer with a ridiculously fizzy head (pour carefully as it rises quickly). Nose is typical of an IPA with a prominence of sour citrus hops and just a touch of sweet malted grain. Taste has a light citrus hop bite up front, which seems milder than the aroma, and then the grains take over with the nutty rye counterbalancing the hops. This produces a balanced beer that seems like it is less bitter than it actually is, but the hop flavor is definitely there. An interesting beer for the style, definitely worth a try.

@ Havregatan. Flaska från Systembolaget (149:-). Trevlig, frisk doft av grape, citrus, ananas, jäst mm. Humlig smak av grape och ananas bla, ganska kryddig på något sätt. Kanske lite spritig i smaken. Rejält besk. Vet inte om jag druckit någon Black Rye IPA förut, men gillade vad jag smakade.

Bottle from Liquor express. Pours black with an inch of khaki foam. Leaves some lacing in the glass. Big leafy hop notes on the nose. I get a slight hunt of rye on the tongue but it’s overpowered by bitterness in the finish. Solid but still nowhere near my favorite style.

750 ml bottle bought @ Systembolaget. Pours hazy dark brown with a huge frothy blackish beige head that slowly dissipates while leaving some soapy trace on the glass. Smell is malty, fruity, slightly herbal and tiny fruity with rye bread, black pepper corns, resinous wood, mango, pineapple, papaya, grapefruit juice, roasted malts, dark roast coffee, moist soil, pine needles, grass and grapefruit rinds. Taste is tiny sweet, bitter, fruity and herbal with roasted malts, pumpernickel bread, peppery wood, grapefruit juice, dark roast coffee, pine needles, mango, pineapple, freshly cut grass, pepper corns, moist soil and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is soft, creamy, tiny oily bitter and medium bodied. Finish is bitter with roasted malts, pumpernickel bread, dark roast coffee, grapefruit juice, freshly cut grass, pine needles and peppery wood. Very nice and balanced BIPA. A more exotic but still good match for our crayfish dinner.

5000 (6862) - Hardened Liver, Washington, USA - AUG 18, 2013
Bottle:   Deep brown, moderate foamy tannish head, nice lacing.   Soft citrus peel, a little candied, also

soft roast.   Lots of citrus peel and pith, candied, on the tongue.   Not all that hoppy, or roasty.   Has a

big sweet citrusy aspect that is somewhat surprising.   Not all that bitter.   Makes a better Pale Ale than an IPA.

  Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Very smooth, sweet, pale roast, candied citrus peel, without a lot of

bitterness.   Too easy to drink.   Could stand to be a little more bitter.   Candied citrus peel lingers.  

Surprised on the sweetness on this one, but without huge roast or bitterness.   Yeah, too easy.
