3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
(on tap @ Mikkeller Bar) Served at around 5 degrees. Pours a slightly cloudy golden with medium white, seemingly receding head although it’s hard to determine if it’s the head or the fact that the beer is poured quite generously with only 3 mm of headspace in the glass. Nice lacework and decent regeneration. It’s no secret that this beer intrigued me for two reasons predominantly: Being from Shanghai and showcasing the first commercial harvest of the Mosaic hop that I’m aware of. So far it it would seem I’m not disappointed: Aroma is nicely hoppy. I get both floral and fruity impressions with notes of juicy (goose?)berries, and papaya and hints of something more pungent, NS-like tropical fruit. As it warms up I seem to detect more grainy and dusty hints with the pungent aroma becoming more dominant. The carbonation is quite lively with several bubbly strands visible in the glass with the resulting prickly feel on the tongue. However, the body seems to stand its own in this beer and I was not distracted. Texture is more watery than oily and the finish is definitely not as bitter as the aroma would lead one to think, which is a plus in my book making the beer highly drinkable, which seems like an important priority for an APA. Actually the taste and finish may be a bit on the sweet side and the beer feels rather filling about halfway through. Flavour follows the nose with the added impression of sweetness from the malt backbone. Very clean taste with the hops predominantly contributing fruity aromas. In that sense it resemble to me the Alpha King although as I recall it this one seems to have a heavier body. Very recommendable. It’s a given that if I found myself in Shanghai I would be extatic about having a beer like this available to me and it’s quite pleasing in Copenhagen too.

Boxing Cat Contender Extra Pale Ale pours a pale golden color with a short-lived white head. The nose, wherein a muscat note is the most prominent component, is simple yet pleasant. The beer reveals more nuances on the palate, adding notes of pine, resin, citrus peel, and caramel to the mix. The texture is nice and smooth, but the carbonation is a tad too weak. Overall a simple brew. Not very exciting, but there is nothing wrong with it.
The contender extra pale ale 4.9% has the least head of the taster set making it look like the poor cousin. A deeper gold than the helles. It does have a pretty darn nice citrusy/floral hop nose with a bit of stinky cheese funk. Light soft round carbonation & a smooth mouthfeel plus a tasty hoppy bit overturns the disappointing look. Delicious. Once warm it mellowed nicely.

Slightly cloudy golden with a decent white, quickly receding white head. Aroma is very pleasant floral with fruity impressions of peach and light exotic fruits. Lively carbonation and a light body with an almost watery texture. Very fresh hoppy taste with a light grainy malty backbone. Very interesting minty note, that unfolds in the mouth with faint touches of grass, leading to a pleasant, hoppy but light light bitter finish. Extremely high drinkabillity. And then again - that minty note! Theis (15152) - Frederiksberg, DENMARK - JAN 30, 2013
