Southpaw Winter Warmer 7.1%
A dark reddish Amber so a bit light in color for a winter warmer for my tastes but it has a great dense beige head of foam that sticks around which is a big plus. The aroma is big bready malts, some gingerbread or cinnamon? Pretty nice malt-forward nose. The body is a bit scratchy with a sparkling bubbly carbonation. The taste is fudge, malty breadiness, it has an earthy edge but ends with a bitter semi-metallic finish. It seems to be made with star anise, coffee & orange peel. And having read that I do get coffee grounds, maybe a touch of licorice & some citrus. An interesting take on a beefed up English brown ale. It is pretty cool and opens up as it warms but seems a bit disjointed to me. Once it warms up the coffee really comes through in the nose, the body becomes smoother & silkier while the whole beer becomes more creamy coffee & definitely improves for that fact.
