Dans Le Trompète major, l’écrivain Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) fit une deScription plutôt alléchante d’une bière extra-forte, liquoreuse et maltée : le vin d’orge. Notre version s’inspire des pures traditions anglaises de ce style. L’utilisation généreuse de houblons lui donnera une bonne amertume lorsque jeune, mais ils perdront leur agressivité en protégeant la bière au fil du temps. L’Ale de Hardy présente des notes fortement maltées de sucre d’orge auxquelles se mélangent des saveurs de caramel de jus de fruits secs. Avec le temps, des notes de porto, de cerises noires et de tire d’érable peuvent se pointer à l’horizon gustatif.

In his historical novel The Trumpet Major, British author Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) provided a rather enticing deScription of a syrupy, malty, extra strong beer: barley wine. Our version is inspired by the pure English tradition of this style. The generous use of hops lends a solid bitterness when young that mellows with age as it protects the beer from the ravages of time. Ale de Hardy presents strong malted barley flavors accented by notes of caramel, dried fruit and a warming sensation from the higher alcohol content. Over time notes of port wine, black cherry and maple taffy may emerge.

Very light haze on this red- amber beer, thin pale tan head. Palate is semi dry with decent fine carbonation. Light dry malts, some caramel - toffee. Mild savoury tone. Rich dried fruits and lesser citric peel. Fairly dry finish. Not bad.

A reddish copper barley wine with a very thin off white head. In aroma, classic vinous malyt with nice floral British hops, range, licorice, & light molasses. In mouth,, a smooth sweet vinous malt with licorice, plums, dark fruits, reminiscent of Macneil’s Old Ringworm.

Bottle, bought @ Beer City, Belgium. Pours clear dark red with a medium, creamy, off-white head. Aroma has lots of raisin, plums, port, vinious, toasted caramel, light milky. Medium carbonation, fine dry and quite creamy mouthfeel. Flavour is elegant, port, toasted caramel, light burnt toast, vinious, warming, raisins, hazelnuts. Quite an elegant Barleywine, even if the alcohol is a bit too present.

2014-10-25. Lightly cloudy dark amber brown body with a small frothy tan had. 3+ Aroma is fairly malty, pleasantly so, with a good amount of carmael and toffee notes, light molassess and moderate alcohol presence. 7++ Flavour is similarly malt forward, toffee/caramel sweetness but with finishes with enough bitterness to keep it fairly balanced. Moderate alcohol throughout. Relatively simple but a very solid take on the style. Enjoyable. Medium bodied palate with soft carbonation. On cask at Cask Days, Toronto.

Pours clear dark mahogany red color with a small off-white head. Caramel on the nose, some ripe plum and raisins, mild wooden tones and subtle alcohol. Quite sweet flavor with ripe fruits, caramel, subtle toffee, hints of licorice and even some distant syrupy notes. Carbonation is soft, light bitterness on the palate finishing to a subtle alcohol burn. A very nice slow sipper.

Bouteille 341ml. Cuivrée claire, col moyen beige. Arôme malté, grains, biscuité moyen, fruité noir avec un bouquet sucré qui laisse ses marques. Palais est fruité; prune, cerise, raisin, le tout est épais avec des notes de sucre candi. Profil est épais au niveau des malts, pâle et cara et un léger côté épicé. Le côté doux sucré est persistant et accompagne une fin de bouche orientée sur un biscuité subtile. Les houblons confèrent une amertume qui reste assez en retrait mais suffit à donner une pointe herbacée. Mérite d’être revisitée pour voir comment les caractéristiques du barley wine évoluent avec le temps.

My Bottom Line:
Zealous coriander seeds take over this Spiced Barley Wine, as candied fruitiness and bitter hops whip up a more traditional base.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the gleaming blood red.
-The malty sweetness is also reminiscent of licorice.
-Mouthfeel is leaner than Thomas Hardy’s Ale or other classic British-style Barley Wines.
-Not quite sure why the beer’s name is a direct reference of Thomas Hardy’s when the beer neither smells nor tastes like Thomas Hardy’s.
-I get the idea of adding coriander to a Brltish Barley Wine base (it works well with Traquair Jacobite, so why not try, right?), but the balance is off, even after aging it for 2 years.

Deep amber-ruby pour with a thick yellow-tan head. The nose is quite hoppy and intensely chewy. Some sweet earthy/piny hoppiness along with a bit of soft sweet caramel. A bit of toffee and some nice light berry fruit. A touch of light oxidation but that adds a nice chewy note that I totally enjoy. Quite a surprise - really damn solid barley wine.

pours relatively clear dark amber, red tint, with a small light beige head, little retention, some lacing. dark red fruits, raisins, cloying caramel, some spices and yeast, some phenols, boozy. medium hopping - load of earthy hops that leads to a short to medium long grassy-citrusy finish. average carbonation, medium body. ok.
