The houblon noir gets its inspiration from India Pale Ales. Occasionally, the drying of the malt was overdone which gave much darker ales, sometimes even black. The results of those "once in a while" batches have gained in popularity in the microbrewery world since the mid-1990s. The Houblon Noir offers a robust bitterness character with clean citrus notes and evergreen resins on top of which a noteworthy level of maltiness, roasted cereals and grilled cookie flavours is perceived.

Dark brown coloured body with a nice, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, oatmeal, grain, earth, bitter chocolate and a bunch of hops - nice and floral. Medium-bodied; Assertive roasted malt flavours that outweigh the hops and show some grain, chocolate and coffee flavours as well, and near the end the hop grassy and floral elements come out. Aftertaste shows some hops up front with the bitterness showing from the grass and a little earthiness and roasted malt flavours bringing out the bitterness even more. Overall, a decent Black IPA with some good hop elements and a nice balance - not bad at all, and worth trying. I sampled this 500 mL montreal-styled bottle purchased from Depanneur Paul in Montreal, Quebec, Canada for CA$4,99 on 17-September-2016, sampled in my hotel room here in Montreal a few hours later on 17-September-2016.

Bottle brought by some dude to the 1st Ratebeer Quebec Gathering. Pours a medium brown with a small offwhite head that leaves good lacing. Nose if of fresh and mint-like hops and roasted malt. Taste is of light roast, chocolate piny hops and is moderately bitter. Moderate body and carbonation. Sticky mouthfeel. Alright but not something I would necessarily come back to.

I guess they just brought this stuff back as no one has rated it in two years. Dark brown pour with a small persistent cap. Nose is kind of weird: faint citrus/floral/pine hops with some roasty, smokey malt notes, plus that spicy prototypical BdM yeast aroma. Taste is a little better than the nose. Compared to some of the other Quebec black ipas out there this doesn't really compete ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Tasted in January 2012. Aroma: Slight alcohol with a touch of caramel. Beside caramel, not a lot of things in there. Visual: Clear black, no opacity. Small head, disappearing fast but creamy and with a nice lacing. Taste: Slightly acid attack with a touch of metal and some bitterness. Caramel is well felt and quite effective but that metal aftertaste is kind of unpleasant. Hops are doing the job but are not adding enough complexity. Soulless beer.

Correct.
