One of the few small grains still grown in southwestern Minnesota, malted rye is the base for this one of a kind ale brewed and aged in tiny Lucan, Minnesota. Following a long, slow fermentation, the beer is stored away in used rye whiskey barrels brought north from our friends at Templeton, located in the equally tiny town of Templeton, Iowa.

My first rating for this brewer thank to pepsiedcan. 750 ml bottle. Pours a hazy amber with a moderate off-white head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left partial lace. Very pleasant aroma of caramel, vanilla, malt, and some noticeable alcohol vapors. The flavor is equally enjoyable with caramel, vanilla, malt, some spiciness from the rye. Medium-full bodied with a nice chewy mouthfeel. Good stuff!

750 ml bottle shared by birchstick- thanks again, Jon! Red waxed bottle, 2011. Pours a hazed amber color with a small off-white head. The aroma has a big vanilla note initially, with a lot of fruits (raisins, berries, dates), caramel, oak, and rye whiskey throughout. The flavor is pretty much the same balance of those same notes. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a sweet, chewy mouthfeel. Nice barrel-aged barleywine.

Light red color. Nearly still. Thick and sweet. The bourbon complements, rather than dominates this beer, but the alcohol presence is prominent.

Bottle through trade from mattyb! Pour has a red brown color and a thin covering of off white head. Aroma has bourbon soaked oak, vanilla, rye, toffee sweetness, yeast, and some dark fruit. mouth feel is medium and there is a nice medium carbonation always appreciated in these big barrel aged beers. Flavor has nice rich malts, rye, big bourbon, wet oak, some sweetness, and yeast esters. It does have plenty of the rye side showing and it somewhat cuts into the whole thing parting the barrel aged side and the barley wine itself. There is some heat but not so much it gets in the way.

750ml, red waxed bottle courtesy of deftim13. thanks, tim! pours a clear, syrupy, reddish copper that is capped by a whispy, thin, light beige head leaving drippy sheets of lace. aroma is outstanding with sweet, soapy, floral esters, toffee malts, yellow raisins, and brandied figs up front backed by sweet rye bread, oak, vanilla, and just a touch of spicy, rye whiskey. flavor is simply wonderful with an incredible balance of dry, floral, and citrusy hops with sweet raisins, figs, toffee, dry oak, and vanilla all backed by spicy rye/caraway malts, warming whiskey, and a hint of cedar on the back end. palate is full bodied with smooth carbonation and a slightly hoppy, slightly sweet, slightly spicy finish. overall, this a really great rye based barleywine that takes very well to those Templeton Rye Whiskey barrels.

last beer of the day .. pours a deep caramel .. light foam, sticky mild lacing .. a soft barleywine, light chewiness .. . . Did you hear about the cross eyed teacher who lost her job because she couldn’t control her pupils?

DietPepsican (1589) - @ $13.99, Iowa, USA - JUN 5, 2012
Dirty cola brown pour with a big off white head. Yuck. Aroma of oxidized raisin, grapes, spice, and booze. Similar flavor, lots of toffee and raisin in the this, some vanilla. Lively carbonation for the alcohol content, mildly sweet, some booze in the finish. A little dirty. Not much barrel in this one really.

Super strong whiskey scents and rye bread. Flavor is in your face whiskey, a little too much for me. Would like to taste it after aging for a while. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This brew pours a hazy copper-amber color with a medium foamy light beige head that diminishes steadily to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon and caramel malt. Rich, smooth body with flavors of whisky, oak and spicy rye malt. Touches of hops too. The finish is somewhat boozy with a dark malt and rye aftertaste. Good beer all around.

750 ml bottle from DalzAle. Nose is rye bread, rye whiskey, light vanilla, sweet toffee, and a hint of butterscotch. Lightly hazy cherrywood brown with a medium, heavy lacing, long lasting beige head. Flavor is light sweetness, a nice dose of whiskey, toffee, and a hint of bitterness. Finishes with pleasant whiskey notes, very light bitterness, and alcohol warmth. Very pleasantly different with being made with malted rye rather than barley.
