One of the few small grains still grown in southwestern Minnesota, malted rye is the base for this one of a kind ale brewed and aged in tiny Lucan, Minnesota. Following a long, slow fermentation, the beer is stored away in used rye whiskey barrels brought north from our friends at Templeton, located in the equally tiny town of Templeton, Iowa.

Bottle pours a clear brown/amber with a glowing ruby hue and a large off-white head. Whiskey barrels very evident, sweet vanilla, rye, caramel, and a hint of citrus. Taste is sweet, an initial hit of citrus followed by caramel and vanilla, then rye spice finishing with some whiskey and a mellow alcohol burn. Really Nice, complex and well balanced and remains very drinkable.

750 ml bottle into snifter, bottled in spring 2012. Pours fairly clear red copper amber color with a nice 1 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big caramel, raisin, toffee, vanilla, coconut, toast, molasses, bourbon, oak, and rye spiciness. Incredible aromas with great balance and complexity of the barrel/malt character. Taste of big caramel, raisin, apple, toast, toffee, molasses, coconut, oak, vanilla, bourbon, earth, floral, and rye spiciness. Slight bitterness with a lightly tart fruitiness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, raisin, apple, toast, toffee, coconut, molasses, oak, vanilla, bourbon, and light rye spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance and complexity of malty flavors; with a great balance of malt/barrel flavors; and zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy and slick mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is an outstanding barrel aged rye barleywine! Huge balance and complexity of flavors; and extremely smooth to sip on. An extremely enjoyable offering.

Bottle 750 ml
Aroma: rather on bold side cask treatment( whiskey). Warm sugars, cola with hint of vanilla and alcohol heat. Well rounded nose thanks to rye contribution. 7+
Apperance: fine haze on amber with lighter, fizzy creamy top. Some lace shown.
Taste/Palate etc. Full bodied. Soft , slightly creamy with bold cask treatment , almost to bitter oak levels. Carbonation low. Plenty heat of alcohol but without fusel fuel feel. Rye try to soften them but this is still one sided whiskey festival.

750 ml bottle to snifter. Looks good;amber with off-white lacing. Smells semi-sweet, malty, and boozy. Tastes like it smells with an average mouthfeel. Boozy, but decent.

Sample from bottle. Pours amber brown with a medium sized beige head. The aroma has caramel, spicy rye, plum, raisin, rye whiskey, earthiness, oak, and a decent amount of vanilla. The alcohol remains hidden. The flavor has caramel and spicy rye, plum, raisin, whiskey, vanilla and oak. Not much of the abv is present. Medium plus body and tasty.

Murky muddy cloudy brown w/ a hint of red pour and a huge frothy small bubbled thick tan head w/ thick lacing. Aroma is delicious extremely well blended mix of sweet roasted malts some other light grains a good amount of sweetness hints of tobacco toffee mixed hops light citrus (very light) touches of grass and clearly whiskey and a hint of vanilla. Big rich full well coated thick palate. Flavor is delicious. Sweet and syruppy but well balanced with a lightly dry hoppy finish more of a floral taste with vanilla, the rye whiskey comes through clean and clear as a nice subtle addition with a slightly warm alcohol note in the swallow. This stuff is just flat out DELICIOUS! One of the best things I’ve tasted in quite a while.

750mL bottle. Poured cola brown with a light reddish-tint.. short smoked beige head. The aroma picked up warm caramel, molasses, and raisins with accents of sweet whiskey, vanilla, and spicy black pepper.. smelled like it was going to be quite sweet, but I enjoyed it. The flavor found strong vanilla, charred oak, and whiskey throughout, with a base of aged caramel and molasses.. peppery rye and tangy whiskey really kick in on the belly-warming finish.. just a little raw right toward the end. Heavy-bodied and chewy on the palate.. lots of sugars and lots of barrel.. I thought it flowed well. Nice one.

Pour is dark brown, little bit of off-white head. Whisky is the smell for sure, though there’s a lot of malt besides. Caramel, raisins, and weirdly tart plum all mix together with some bourbon to help out. Definite heat on this one. Nice.
