COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
One of the few small grains still grown in southwestern Minnesota, malted rye is the base for this one of a kind ale brewed and aged in tiny Lucan, Minnesota. Following a long, slow fermentation, the beer is stored away in used rye whiskey barrels brought north from our friends at Templeton, located in the equally tiny town of Templeton, Iowa.

Thanks to PaulUnwin for sharing this one. Cheers, Paul! Pours a hazy caramel color with an off-white head. Nose is toffee, wood, rye whiskey, and some light barleywine fruits with hints of booze. Flavor is similar with big toffee, some booze, some barleywine fruit and mild oaky vanilla. Medium in body and a delicious sipper.

Pours a very dark copper color with a small head that lingers a while. Aroma is dominated by rye whiskey with notes of sweet caramel and butterscotch candy. Taste is moderately sweet, dominated by the rye whiskey flavor. It doesn’t allow the other flavors to come through much which is a bit disappointing. There are some candy-like notes in the finish. Slight alcohol warming in the finish is nice. Medium body and very sticky mouthfeel. Overall, its pretty good, I just wish some other flavors would come through more.

Aroma of malt malt and more malt. Slight booze. Taste follows vanilla and oak, more malt. Slightly thin. A lot going on here, very complex. I'm glad I tried this ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: SEP 13, 2012 Bottle from Brian - thanks! Clear reddish pour with a slick of tan foam and steady carbonation. Aroma is heavy rye whiskey with grain and some underlying sweet malt with alcohol spice and bitterness. Taste is heavy, semi-boozy whiskey with spice and a thick barleywine malt backbone of raisin, caramel, and sweet toffee. Clean, coating mouthfeel. Too heavy on the rye whiskey for me but worth a try.

Bottle via Matty and mark. Pours a medium brown with medium tan head. Aroma is of bourbon and candy sugar. Taste is slight pepper up front with some sweetness that really works here. Some vanilla notes and more rye whiskey notes. Overall this is a great barley wine that really works.

The pour is a clear copper color with a small tan head. Light citrus and pine hops on the nose, definitely a lot of rye, bread, and toffee. There’s a hint of toast, some whiskey, and a nice bit of vanilla. The flavor is a bit more pine forward than expected and somewhat bitter. Sweet caramel and toffee malts, vanilla, and whiskey to balance that out. Quite a bit of rye malt, light citrus flavor to it as well.

Bottle:   Deep caramel, ruby hued, moderate to large frothy off-white head, nice lacing.   Big caramel and toasty whiskey aroma.   Sweet caramel maltiness up front, whiskey, soft graham cracker and vanilla.   Not too robust or heavy, feeling fairly moderate.   Not a big Barley Wine, has all the flavors but the body isn’t too big.   Finishes with lots of whiskey, some caramel, rye, and graham cracker.   Good, but needs more body and a little bit of hop bite to balance it out.   Thanks for the bottle Bob!

Bottle courtesy of GT2, thanks! Hazy brown color, bright white head. Aroma of spiced brown bread. Taste is very boozy and sweet spiced pumpernickel.

750mL thanks to pepsiedcan. Clear deep red tea pour with small, tan head. Sheety lace. Nose is super rich buttery bourbon, whoa. Thick butter, coconut, small tomato, sugar, spicy oak. Taste is rich, silky, dense. Thick palate. Clean finish. Mild lemon acid with cooked tomato. Very nice for style. Very bourbon heavy. A nice surprise.

Bottle thanks to my mom. Pours a hazy deep brown with a light brown head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has a nice rye note with some dark sweet grains and a nice bit of booze from the barrels. Flavor again begins with a dark rye note that is joined by some sweet dark grains and a hint of molasses with a boozy backing.
