3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Medium copper clear color. A little off in the taste. Overall a weak Scotch ale. Brau brothers disappointes.
Rating from 9/20/2010....Sweet malty aroma with a touch of butterscotch...light copper color...flavor is totally different than aroma...its crazy smoked, like a burnt hot dog...its not great....and that’s it...very simple slowrunner77 (12460) - Reno, Nevada, USA - SEP 27, 2014
"pretty sure this is newly labeled as Bancreagie Scotch ale. The smokiness is the beers forte. It’s a little lite in color and body, but not distractingly so. The peaty, malty aroma and flavor are quite nice."

Malty with a subtle smokiness to it that is decent. Not much else to compliment is, though. sodakotakid (230) - Belle Fourche, South Dakota, USA - JAN 14, 2012
A nice copper color with little to no head. This beer tastes earthy and woody, with a light smokiness and sweetness. Fairly bland!! bsp77 (724) - Minnesota, USA - SEP 5, 2011
Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.
Appearance: Hazy reddish-orange with minimal head and a mostly dead look.
Aroma: Sweet caramel and peat malts. Maybe a touch of floral hops.
Taste: Extremely strange combination of sweet caramel, medicinal cherry and unusually sharp and smoky peat. It is not a good carbonation.
Palate: Moderate carbonation, medium body, strange finish which I can’t describe.
Overall: This is my third Brau Brothers beer. The other two (Sheephead, Ring Neck) were fantastic. This is just poorly made.

A decent beer, but I am much more fond of their newer scotch ale, Bancreagie. ddemmingjr (800) - Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA - APR 29, 2011
Bottle from Joe: pours much lighter than expected, like root beer. Smells and tastes like smoked salmon. Distinctive peat, brown sugar, rich mouthfeel. Sticky on the lips. Not a typical scotch ale but reasonable. CanIHave4Beers (4194) - Pouring Bus, Iowa, USA - APR 5, 2011
That is some picture there.... My goodness. The beer pours a bit of a light amber color almost orange with a medium head that seems to be settling out fairly tightly into a small head. The aroma is sweet and almost candy like with a distinct cured meat smokiness. There is also a bit of a floral scent going on here, I like the smokiness, I really do, but the aroma is all kinds of messy.... not cohesive at all, the aromas don’t compliment each other and seem to express themselves (at best) sort of independently of each other. The flavor is better, but this seems entirely more like a smoked beer than anything I’ve had even close to a Belgian style Scotch ale. Overall the malt sweetness and the sort of sweet tart fruitiness commingle with the nice smoke character and make the flavor about as out of whack as the aroma. There is a chocolate flavor that is nice enough and emerges as the beer warms. The ironic thing here is that I probably would have loved this beer 2 years ago when I was totally turned off to this brewery by other stuff they made. wlajwl (6943) - Quad Cities, Iowa, USA - MAR 20, 2011
Mild malty and smoky flavor to it, beyond that its pretty thin in body and not great but not horrible. crossovert (13413) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 7, 2011
I am a big fan of smoked beers and smoked scotch ales, but this one was garbage.
