Draft. Dark brown. Malty (roasty malts, bready, caramel). Earthy, spicy, yeasty. Slight grassy hops. Sweet with slight bitter edge throughout. Dry hoppy finish. Good beer. (2008)

Fresh bottle. Chocolate-rust in color. Broken cap of creamy foam. Clean aroma of flowers, hazelnut, smoke, toasted bread, toffee-glazed nuts and cocoa. Soft and spacious carbonation. Brisk minerals and a bright coarse herbality, up front. Polished malt develops an earthy cocoa dryness and snappy toast as it gracefully blossoms. Deep malt extraction yields a snug and gripping toastiness along with powdery body-enriching textures. Bouncy nuttiness beneath it all. Crisply malty yet deep, beefy and juicy at the same time. A crunchy Munich bite links up with notes of anise-tinged hops and drying minerals in the cohesive finish. A tad thin, but all in all a very clean and sophisticated Franconian dunkel of great finesse and understated complexity. Now I’m eager to try their Festbier!

Sehr malziges Dunkel.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark amber to medium brown. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted bread, molasses), lightly hoppy (herbs), with notes of earth/peat, brown sugar, toffee. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/creamy texture, lively carbonation. Very neat brew...aroma is kinda like a Scotch ale, very peaty and richly malted. Doesn’t drink as richly as it smells, but it’s balanced well. Not far from 4+ status.
