3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
(33 cl bottle from Wein Kultur Moabit; BBD: September 19th 2013) Pours a clear copper with medium, white head. Good lace and decent retention. Aroma is malty, caramel with some odd, herbal notes that occasionally come off as a bit skunky. Hops come through more in the taste - both upfront mixed with cereal sweetness and as a driness toward the end. Oily texture, full malty body, medium carbonation and a bittersweet finish. Amber ale is a broad style and this seems to me to fall under it although the marriage of hops and malt in this beer seems to me to be not entirely harmonic. I don’t think I tried the Wakatu-hop before but I imagine the Hallertau-resemblance could play a big part in me perceiving it as ’skunky’ - it’s definitely not.
