At cellar temperature and into a snifter. Midnight ruby with excellent clarity and radiance. Looming, silken tan head holds for the length and weaves a dense lace. Well it nails the ’pepper’ side in the aroma. Hefty spice atop velvety chocolate ganache and chocolate truffles, light liquorice and anise with a hint of blackberries. Mmmm, that is definitely unexpected. Melds light rauch flavours and scorched meat with the pepper and rich chocolate and pulls off what is effectively a peppered steak in its savoury umami which dominates the palate. Carbonation is a little high but that can be shaken off. Thick, chewy strands of liquorice also are at the forefront. With a background of chocolate this has a lot going on. I never thought I’d like it given my view on novelty ales, but this drinks so well. Finish is long with a smokiness to it that matches the chocolate, liquorice and pepper. Body is firm, rounded and filling so I say I’d limit it to a few for a session and then move on to a pale ale or two. Sumptuous and original. Looks.. Very dark, ruby tinge, med- lge latte colour head.
Smells..roast malts, slight smokey meats, spice/pepper hints.
Tastes..roasty and smokey malts, peppery and smokey meat vibes.

Looks okay - black with small head. Aroma is mild peppery quality and some very minor meaty smoke. Same on the flavour but not quite as exciting due to perhaps too much vegetative taste. Lovely peppery finish though! Okay beer.

Pours very dark brown with a large lasting head.
Nose shows pepper, smoked malt, meaty notes, soft roasted malt. Very savoury-seeming.
More pepper as a flavours alongside the smoked malt but the roasted notes are a lot stronger than in the aroma. The name says it all.

From a 500ml bottle on 6/7/2014 (shared by Butz with thanks). Pours a very dark brown with a small head. Has an aroma which really does smell a bit meaty and quite peppery, with a dash of chocolate. In the mouth, hot pepper dominates, with some steak and some roasty bitter notes following. This really does come across as pepper steak in a bottle. But I’m not sure you want this flavour in a beer. Very unusual but a touch harsh and not particularly enjoyable. Would not be inclined to revisit.
