The beer is an 11.5% Imperial Brown Ale which we have aged in amazing Spanish sweet red barrels from Malaga. Stewart Bowman, our Head Brewer, devised an Imperial Brown Ale designed to perfectly complement the wine flavours and extract maximum depth and character from the giant barrels. We also felt the Imperial Brown Ale was ideally suited to be barrel aged and as well as the infusion of the Malaga wine character will also benefit added complexity and maturity from the time in oak.

Bottle. Dark brown with a quickly diminishing beige head. Barrel, light vinous, prunes, sherry, light wood, cocoa, brown sugar. Medium body, soft and smooth texture, very soft carbonation. Medium sweet with some bitterness in the finish. Warming alcohol.

375ml bottle shared with jeevan. Pours very dark brown, thin tan head. Juicy red wine aromas, wood and marzipan. Really intriguing. Taste balances things out between sweet, bitter and booze. Port-like towards the end. Very nice.

At the first Kinki Beer Tasting, bottle 3273 of 9987. My second favorite of the four, this imperial brown/barleywine was the best balanced of the bunch. It poured a reddish-brown almost cola-ish pour. The aroma had a touch of booze but was mostly malty sweet, caramel & raisin. The medium-light body was malty sweet goodness, not too complex but incredibly solid.

375ml bottle as a gift (11.5% abv.):
Sweet with some ripe & dark fruits plus brown sugar adding to the sweetness. There is some grapes and hints of alcohol that smell almost like a fortified wine along with hints of vanilla and port.
Dark brown, almost black with a thin, bubbly head that is a tan brown in colour and quickly turns to a touch of lacing around the edges.
Dark, dried fruit with some grapes & a taste slightly reminiscent of red wine that goes with the aging process of this one I guess. There is some mild strength malts with a part nutty, part sweet taste that includes some vanilla. The beer is slightly boozy with some sugar and hints of caramel in there as well.
Medium to full body with quite a sweet and boozy feel although a lot of the alcohol was successfully hidden and the beer had a better balance that expected. Carbonation was fairly subdued and the drinkability was very good with this one.

A really good beer from Brewdog and an excellent first beer from the Abstrakt series for me. Far more balanced than I would have expected from an 11.5% abv. beer, a real pleasure to drink.

On the train from Hereford to Inverness, bottle from Twickers, 18/10/13. Opaque mahogony brown with a thin light tan covering. Nose is dark malts, toffee fudge, light booze, muscavado sugars, light smoke, earthy cocoa tones, fruity jams. Taste comprises dark malts, berry fruit compote, cake mix, chocolate, toffee fudge, raspberry tones, sherry notes. Full bodied, fine carbonation, boozey finale. Decent drop, the alcohol is well integrated and this beer carries a good level of depth - lots going on!

Corked 37.5 cl bottle @ home (bottle #6948). Pours brown with a lot of sediment and an off-white head that leaves some lacing. Aroma and flavour is roasted malt, caramel, milk chocolate, dark fruits, and wine with some warming alcohol in the finish.

Visual: Beautiful simplistic Brew Dog label, corked and twisty-cap top secured green bottle. Pours dark cola brown with a reddish hue, small foamy dissipating head, ringed retention, sedimentation, some slow-moving activity. Nose: Thick, sweet caramel malts, brown sugar and barley malt. Attack: thick syrupy mouthfeel Mid-palate: caramel sweetness(8/10) mixed with minor alcohol detection, (MAIN) molasses, soy sauce, chocolate Finish: medium sweet & sour, coffee tanginess, red-fruity sweet malty finish. Summary: Expensive at $18/half bottle but very worth it considering the superb flavour profile, drinkability, potency, and overall high quality craftsmanship.

(375ml bottle) Purchased from The Strath froth an ungodly $19. Bottle 4329. Pours near headless with a deep black body. Nose of sweet soy and molasses. Great body and oily texture. Strong boozy and heavily malted. Not worth anything close to the price but very strong palate, fun elixir. --- reviewed on
