The beer is an 11.5% Imperial Brown Ale which we have aged in amazing Spanish sweet red barrels from Malaga. Stewart Bowman, our Head Brewer, devised an Imperial Brown Ale designed to perfectly complement the wine flavours and extract maximum depth and character from the giant barrels. We also felt the Imperial Brown Ale was ideally suited to be barrel aged and as well as the infusion of the Malaga wine character will also benefit added complexity and maturity from the time in oak.

375ml bottle. Pours an opaque deep chestnut, bordering on black, with a tiny light beige head, which neither lasts well nor leaves any lacing to speak of. Rye bread and biscuit malt notes, slightly musty red wine and very mild floral hops make up the aroma. A touch of sweet red wine introduces it, giving way to moderate fruity, spicy hops. The wine comes in strongly at the mid-palate, which is dominated by its slightly musty sweetness, although a touch of rye bread malt does come through. Charry oak leads into an oaked red wine finish, which leaves a slight alcoholic aftertaste. This is not BrewDogs best effort. It lacks the hops presence implied by the "imperial brown ale" styling, and is dominated by the musty sweetness of the wine, making for a fairly messy beer.

Bottled. Somehow this one has just stuck around, without being drunk, but then again I suppose the extra aging hasnt atleast made things worse. Deep ambery brown colour with a minor off-white head, which disappears quite quickly. Aroma is alcohol, chocolate, some sherry, mild ripe fruits as well as some raisins. Flavour is sweet malts, chocolate, some raisins, ripe fruits, mild sherry, berries, some toffee and mild nutty notes. Not all too disturbing alcohol, and in fact rather mellow.

375ml bottle 3540 of 9987, bottled on 2012-06-20, so 4 1/2 years old. Pour dark brown with big disappearing bubbles. Aroma of porto, meals, mollasse, black cherries, woods and dark chocolat. Taste is from thick brown bread, spirits feel, the vinous feel is almost gone, feel more like a beer aged in a scotch barrel. Low carbonation, probably due to its age, high body and long warm alcohol finish. Sublime.
