Zlotta (3808) - Hagen / Düsseldorf, GERMANY - DEC 10, 2016
UPDATED: DEC 10, 2016 Sampled from 0.375 l bottle. Dark reddish brown with some beige bubbles on top. Sweetish, malty and quite fruity aroma of raisins, blackcurrant, plums and licorice. Sweetish-malty, spicy and moderately fruity taste of caramel, raisins, lots of licorice, plums and some chocolate, followed by a long, slightly bitter, spicy and rather warming-alcoholic finish. Medium body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Way too spicy, absolutely unbalanced.

UPDATED: JUL 5, 2016 One of my favorites. The barley wine is in itself good, but all the layers in aromas and taste that the spice, berries and peppers bring makes it really one of a kind - that’s probably the point of the Abstrakt series. The barley wine adds the alcohol and sweet aromas, while the added tartness and smoke from the berries and the pepper makes your taste buds really work for it. Only downside is that, although an experience, it’s not very well balanced.

(Bottle) Black colour with brief, bubbly head. Malty, roasted, spicy nose with ginger, liquorice, strong black coffee, soy sauce, cacao, treacle, a hint of smoke, juniper berries and pine needles. Malty, spicy taste with liquorice, soy sauce, ginger, a touch of chilli, espresso, dark chocolate, juniper berries, pine needles, honey and a finish with a smoky chilli touch and a warming alcohol glow. Full body, quite sweet, with a gentle coffee bitterness. Complex, spicy and tasty, but hardly subtle. Very nice.

375 ml bottle shared with crew. Pours an orange tinted black with no head. Aroma is ginger, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Flavor is chocolate, ginger and cinnamon. Finish is chocolate, coffee, nice bitterness. Full body, velvety and oily mouthfeel, no carbonation.

czar (9412) - Québec, Quebec, CANADA - DEC 13, 2015
pours hazy dark brown without a head, no lacing whatsoever. beef stock, burnt ginger and caramel, tingling pepper, roasted maltiness - hint of smokiness, minerals, aniseed, other spices. low carbonation, medium to full body - thick, gingery-spices finish. pretty nice stuff. a sipper, obviously.

About the only Brewdog Abstrakt beer that has really disappointed me. The chipotle peppers dominate the taste profile. There might be a hint of Ginger, but I don’t taste raspberry or any other overt berry presence. The barleywine body and malt, as well as anticipated warmth from the alcohol level are unfortunately missing.

From the very old notes, hence this is not a real rating, but more just a mark to myself that I have tried this at one point. Bitter beer with a lot of notes of chocolate, body is rather thin for such a big beer.
