375 ml bottle. A very dark brown body with a small brown head. Aroma of dark malt, dry fruit, berries and hint of liquorice and mild oak. Flavor is sweet malty, oak, fruit, balanced bitterness and a bit vinous in alcohol. Fine body and a good aftertaste. Interesting and tasty. ComradeK (1259) - Sydney, AUSTRALIA - JUN 21, 2013
375ml bottle. Pours an opaque black, with a moderate beige head, which lasts well and leaves good lacing. The aroma has dark chocolate, warm chilli, cured meat and savoury malt notes. Mild herbal and lemon hops up front gradually segue into sweet but zingy ginger. This blends surprisingly well with rich dark chocolate and toasted rye bread malt in the mid-palate. Warming chilli comes in towards the finish, where it blends very nicely with ginger and dark chocolate. There is an almost whisky and dry ginger aftertaste. This is one of those out there BrewDog beers where all the strange ingredients come together and work very well. A rich and enjoyable brew. Appearance: Dark brown/black, initial tan head about 1cm thick which quickly disappeared.
Aroma: Ginger spice and zest are key notes, herby, marzipan, slight treacle note, orange, lavender and whisky. Reminded me of Jamaican ginger cake. As the beer warmed up a hint of smokiness came through.
Taste: Medium sweetness, harsh bitterness, long alcohol warmth and heat, with a warming pepper note lingering on the tongue.
Palate: Full bodied, slick texture, little to no carbonation, astringent, lingering finish of alcohol warmth.
Comments: Thoroughly enjoyed this one and would have it again. Served in snifter. JohnRMurdoch (5047) - Glasgow, SCOTLAND - JUN 14, 2013
Bottle shared @ BrewDog. Alcohol hop pine aroma. Complex sugary sweet fruitcake alcohol flavour. Bitter sweet alcohol aftertaste. Ok but not my sort of beer. ClubGonzo (5685) - Bergen, NORWAY - JUN 4, 2013
Bottle. Pours a tar black body with a medium beige head. Aroma is licorice, leather, dark chocolate, wood, hints of black berries and deep malty tones. Balanced and very nice. Taste is licorice, roasted bread tones, espresso, booze, and hints of leather and some sweet grape-like notes. A bit of dry wood-like touches in the finish. Full body, medium carbonation. A very nice barley wine which actually borders on an imperial stout IMO.

This tap was simply too good to pass up despite the vast selection of lower ABV offerings. A mixture of imperial stout and barley wine, it has this nice punch that strikes a balance between being a barrel bomb and underdone.
Aroma / Appearance - The rich thick legs crawl down the sides like sheets of melting ice. The black oily base seeps like bubbly oil. Cherry, oak, vanilla, and anise make this smell like someone mixed cherry pie and coffee into a pint glass.
Flavor / Palate - Cherry, smoky notes, and malt accompany the black coffee. This is strong from the first sip. However it does not crush the palate like some high gravity beers. Instead it takes its time to unfold. Leaving a calling card on the tongue it clings to the throat with a malty finish of smoked coffee beans. If it weren’t so expensive I might have taken a growler home.
Bottle from verksgata. Very dark beer with tanny head. Complex nose with roasted malts, caramel, alcohol almost medicinal but in a nice way. Flavour is sweet with hints of alcohol, maltynes, spicy with a medicinal alcoholic finish without letting it getting too far. HopRedHead (397) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - MAY 27, 2013
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours black with a dissipating short khaki head. Aroma is caramel, pepper, aniseed and butterscotch. Smells awesome. Taste is a nice caramel, molasses and aniseed sweetness with a touch of chipotle pepper. After taste has a lot of ginger and berry/dark fruit sweetness. Thick oily body. Nice dry bitterness was a suprise, great brew. maneliquor (3514) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - MAY 24, 2013
Bottle from Mane Liquor. Pours pitch black with a small, light tan head which quickly disappears to a ring. Nose is full of zesty ginger and light peppers. Heavy aniseed and toffee. Light berry fruit driven tones but faint. Taste shows heavy spiced and salted toffee. Liquorice comes through as it warms up. Melted caramel over pepper. Very toffee and spice driven. Works extremely well together and is very balanced. Damn good and intriguing stuff
