Cask at the Rake. Opaque black beer. Light semi dry palate. Very lightly toasted malt. Tangy like a good porter. Subtle but nice red berry fruits underneath. Lots of dark malt but pleasantly light.
Tap @ Small Bar. Pours a fairly viscour dark brown with a creamy tan head that left some nice lacing. Nice nose of roasted malts, wheat and oats. A pretty tasty one from Brewdog. badlizard (5533) - Berkeley, California, USA - MAR 23, 2010

Another style defying brew from the BrewDog folks. Black in color. Some coffee aromas then a blast of pure smokiness. I was expecting a nice smooth Guinness-esque beer and got a rauchbier. Not bad but a sipper for me. JohnnyJ (5562) - San Diego, California, USA - MAR 20, 2010
On tap at Stone Bistro. Pours a dark brown, with tan head. Dark malts, sweetness, bubble gum sweetness, fruit (banana and raisin), toasted bread, and a little bit of chocolate. Creamy, light mouthfeel, not heavy at all. Nice stout that actually is quite light, with an interesting wheat influenced flavor.

Cask gravity at You’ll Never Walk Alone, Kolding. Black with a small but lasting tan head. Fruity and resinous hop aroma, with a hint of licorice. Sweet licorice and fruity hops flavour with a roasted malt. After a long lasting flavour experience, the finish is strong roasted with a slightly ashy touch. Delicious! Wheat character? Pours completely black with a small, staying, creamy, beige head. Aroma is roasted, some sharp ashes, dark chocolate and a whole lot of wonderul hops. Resiny, piney, lemony and some plant sap. Damn, there’s a lot of hops in this! Low carbonation, fine light and dry mouthfeel. Flavour is sweet and malty at first with chocolate and roasted malts. Slightly ashy. Really lovely hops power, Simcoe?, citrus, light plant sap. A touch of liqourice. Super elegant and well put together despite the very different stout and hops flavours. Roasted black IPA or American Stout? Don’t care, it’s just lovely!
Cask, Pivo, York. Black as the abyss with a medium tan head. Whopping big hit of resinous hops in the nose with juicy tropical fruit notes. Yet more big hoppage comin’ right at ya in the flavour , with some citrus and roasted malt character also evident, gorgeous stuff. Stonking bitter finish. Massively downable, could go all night on this. Gutted that this is a one off as its a straight up belter!! Hey hey mama said the way you move, gon’ make you sweat, gon’ make you groove etc

Pours out a lovely dense black, no messing, with perhaps a ruby hue. You may not be surprised to hear that the nose is pretty powerful, they’ve stuffed in plenty of hops & it shows. Punchy resinous pineapple, along with some treacle & malt on the nose. Big booming flavours on the palate as well, lots of grassy resin, wafts of citrus, black malts, bit of treacle again then a proper bitter finish. A very tasty beer, not quite in the very top league though, it just lacks a bit of depth & complexity but if you see it on tap somewhere get a pint in quick. Hmmm. My score seems possibly greater than my actual thoughts on the beer, but I just rated it objectively. All in all a very drinkable beer with nice flavours. Hops are up front with a good black IPA rubber flavour. Aroma is spot on though, lots of hops earth, orange, grapefruit and tar. Looks good. All in all a well enough made beer, it just doesn’t excite me massively, however, I would happily drink it all night long. I suppose my main complaint is that the beer starts off appearing to have great complexity, but half way through it just seems to become a bit linear and dare I say it boring - I found this to be the case with the Chaos Theory. In my mind these are beers with undoubted flavour, but it’s all up front and in your face, which in it’s own way is great, but after a while they leave you thinking: "Is it all shock and awe tactics?" I mean is it all about the attack and not the sustained effort, are these beers becoming like the Iraq/Afghanistan war: rush in, flex the muscles then try and figure out how to sustain the attack hold ground and eventually pull out leaving behind a better world? I love brewdog, don’t get me wrong, they’re breathing life and youth into a beer world saturated with tame "beardy-weirdy" politics, and for the UK they’re the closest thing we have to US style craft breweries, but I feel that the beers have the clout but lack the complexity and richness of their US contemporaries. This seems like a bit of harsh crit, but I’m just being honest, and having had a fareshare of Brewdog beers recently, back-to-back (which perhaps is not the best way in terms of not becoming saturated) I’m seeing a trend toward blitzing the palate and leveling it, but not thinking to much about how to construct a fuller picture. You can bomb a country to bits, but you gotta think how your gonna rebuild it. I want Brewdog to be in the running for a long time, and IMHO to do this they’re gonna have to work on a long-term strategy with stages and complexity, otherwise they’re in danger of only targeting the "new Ale" drinker who thinks they’ve hit upon something great but is really only feeling the first stages of premature enlightenment. I hope they don’t just market towards the begginer palate. This may saound teriibly arrogant, but hey whats experience for if not to be oppinionated? Wish I could spell though...
