Bourbon Baby is a baby Scotch ale which we’ve gone on to age in bourbon barrels. The Scotch ale base is light bodied and low ABV, and brings toasted shortcake and blossom honey flavours; the barrel ageing adds a demonic, dark vanilla twist. Rich brown sugar, hints of smoke, spiced fruit, chocolate and raisins are just some of the multitude of flavours that have developed.

Our aim was to showcase barrel ageing in a lower ABV beer and we felt the malty scotch ale base was the perfect way to do this. The body remains light, yet there is a complexity quite unlike anything you would normally expect in a Scotch ale.

W smaku lekko wodniste, karmelowe, mocno drewniane. Sprawia wrażenie gryzienia gałązki. Wanilia jest delikatna, suszone owoce również. Trochę palonych słodów, bardzo wodnista kawa, karmel. Zapach zapowiadał coś fajniejszego, smak delikatnie rozczarował.

Bottle. Pours clear dark reddish brown with a small offwhite head. Aromas of bourbon, vanilla, dark fruits, caramel, toffee. Taste is like a Carbed watered down bourbon. Vanilla, booze, dark fruits, toffee, light chocolate.

A: Black as the darkest midnight. N: Dark bitter chocolate, rich chocolate mousse, orange peel. T: Bitter and acidic, but this is absolutely necessary to cut through this squid ink of a drink. Citrus peel. Whisky. Biscuits, Soy sauce. P: About as full as it can get. O: It is almost impossible to envisage having two of these in a row, it is that intense. But as a single drink, it is hard to beat.

Medium aroma of malts, caramel, wood, bourbon, vanilla, berries, chocolate and roasted malts.

Turbid/opaque red/dark brown beer with a medium beige head.

Starts medium/heavy sweet with malts, caramel, wood, bourbon, vanilla, berries and chocolate; ends slightly bitter and dry with roasted malts.

This beer is intense, complex and balanced. This is even more true for its abv. Great soft bourbon flavour that works wonders with the base beer. The aroma could have been stronger and the palate is slightly too thin.

Clear, very dark, cherry red. Thin, filmy, light tan head. Dates. Dark fruit. Some smoke. Some grassiness. Taste is a slip of liquorice sweetness. Then cocoa powder dry. Slightly thin palate. Smoky, dry finish.

Bottle from Eltham Wines, Eltham (October 2016). Dark brown pour with a beige head. Nose of brandy butter, nuts, sultanas, toffee, caramel. Flavours of dried fruit, toffee, caramel. Nice.

maekchu (4098) - Hirakata, JAPAN - JAN 6, 2017
Bottle from World Beer Market (Sake no Taniguchi) online shop. Roast malt nose, with quite a lot of bourbon. Somme’s berries, and a sort of alcohol presence. Dark translucentborwn color. Caramel, tangy berries, raisins, barrel, light chocolate, and a moderately malty finish. Thin-medium body. Feels a bit stronger than it is. Pleasant and not overdone with the barrel bit. Both fruit and bourbon barrel get to shine a little here.
