COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
bottled and keg, special
The infamous Clown King is in town, with his twisted circus of salaciousness. Ready to corrupt the senses, he’s brought together two show-stopping acts in a riot of flavour and aroma. In this two-ring extravaganza, an imperial pale ale and a barley wine come crashing together, and left standing in the sawdust is an American Barley Wine. This freak of nature might be red, but that’s where the similarities with a normal clown’s nose end - on Clown King’s nose you’ll find all the fun of the fair, with caramel and toasted marshmallow aromas, but also raisin and dried fruit. With toasty malt and sweet dark fruit flavours, and a smooth, chewy mouthfeel, you’ll be lulled into a false sense of security, before the Clown King springs up and flings a bucket of spicy, fruity hops right in your face. With such complexity and flavour packed in, like a tiny car full of clowns, you’ll soon be on your feet, joining in with the thunderous applause, when suddenly the Clown King is gone, leaving only a fleeting sense of warmth, and a desire to follow him onto the next town, where the show will begin all over again. - See more at: http://www.brewdog.com/product/clown-king#sthash.mOBuzOIO.dpuf

Pours red, minimal head that dissipates quickly, aroma of caramel, some resinous hops. Full bodied, oily feel, soft carbonation, Taste is more caramel, with some raisins and berries. Good strong bitterness and the required heavy cloying sweetness that comes with a Barley Wine. The reviews so far seem a little harsh, as a 12% US style Barley Wine it ticks a lot of boxes for me. Its not the best Barley wine I’ve ever had, and It may not be the most balanced beer, but it doesn’t need to be! An interesting brew, would recommend to those wanting some kick from their beer.

Kicsi, gyorsan elillanó hab, barna szín. Gabonás, meggyes, szilvás, karamelles illat. Erős édes karamelles, gabonás ízekkel indít, majd meggyes, szilvás, szedres aromák emelkednek fel, lecsengéskor pirosgyümölcsös és kissé konyakos, kesernyés komponensek bukkannak elő. Nagyon testes, enyhén szénsavas és közepesen keserű. Intenzív és gazdag ízvilágú, jól összerakott, szuper sör.

[Leżak 4 lata] W smaku bardzo słodko, multum karmelu i suszonych owoców, nieco miodu. Bogato i intensywnie. W smaku podobnie - intensywnie karmelowe, także suszone owoce, nieco kwaśności owocowej - jakby winogrona. Sporo ciała, goryczka max średnia, wszystko doskonale ułożone, ukryty alkohol, sporo ciała. Warto było trzymać!

Bottle: Deep golden to copper coloured, hazy, small - but stable - tanned foamy layer; moderate sweet-raisiny and malty (molasses?) nose with a tinge of wood/vanilla and sherry, hops in the background, but hardly detectable; moderate to solid sweet-bitter flavour, full bodied, quite smooth; warming alcohol in the sweet fruity-malty and bitter finish. Very good, surely not too exciting...

Demens (489) - Budapest, HUNGARY - DEC 1, 2016
UPDATED: DEC 2, 2016 0,33l bottle. Hazy copper/red colour with a quickly shrinking small tan head. Aroma: Oh my. Very intense. Raisin, honey, caramel with coffee notes but also has a strong matured cheese and a sourish fruity tone. Also has some serious rum/cognac caracteristics. Very complex and strong, I’m impressed. Taste: Very sweet thick malty start (banana bread) with a light pleasent bitter (coffee) mouthfeel. Very spicey (vanilla, clove, black pepper) and has a real tasty and silky rum tone with nuts. Creamy texture. Full body with soft carbonation. Long, strong bitter finish. Amazingly complex maybe a bit messy from the dozens of caracters but than this should be the worst problem of mankind. Great beer.

(bottle, 33cl) Hazy, amber to brown colour with a short and tanned foamy layer. Sweet malty aroma with notes of dried and ripe fruits, such as raisins and dates, accompanied by hints of caramel and alcohol. Moderately sweet and mildly bitter flavour, full bodied with a soft carbonation. Delicately sugary dark malty start with present notes of dried fruits, slightly vinous taste with spicy notes and herbal hops in the background; sweet-bitter, mildly vinous fruity finish with warming alcoholic notes. 16.XI.16

Hazy dark amber with amost no head. Aroma is cedar wood, dark fruits, some wheat, caramel. Taste is intense bitterness, with intense syrup sweetness. Too heavy for me. Oily and heavy. Low carbonation. Phew.

Hazy amber reddish color with almost no head. Aroma has mostly dried fruits like dates and raisins. Taste starts sweet, sugary, with caramel and dried fruits. Earthy bitterness on the finish. Medium body and carbonation. Slightly boozy for my taste but overall it’s quite good.
