"The new black", BrewDog’s BIPA, strange I haven’t had this before... Rating from a bottle bought at Bierhalle Deconinck. Irregularly lacing, tan coloured, moussy head remaining closed for a very long time, on top of an initially clear, very dark chestnut brown beer with burgundy reddish hue, but black in overall appearance. Strong and dank aroma of cedar wood essential oil, coffee grounds, dried grapefruit peel, salmiak, wet leather, black olive, moist chicken spices, bitter chocolate hidden underneath, soaking wet marijuana, toffee, fig, juniper berries, walnut. Vivid but clean ’Anglo-Saxon’ fruitiness in the onset, hinting at raisins, fig and pear with a restrained but well-positioned sweetishness surrounded by a soft elderberry-like sourishness and a thin but effective black olive-like umami edge, soft carbonation perfectly fit for the style, smooth and supple body, toffeeish in first instance but quickly becoming toasted and gently bittering, very nutty as well, gaining a subtle chocolatey quality and flowing through the finish as the aromatic hops show up, adding a layer of citrusy and notably piney dry hop fragrance retronasally as well as a soft, resinous, spicy bitterness that adds to the lingering toasted malt bitterness. Some vague, gin-like warming alcohol as well, but nothing to overpower this elegant play of toasted malts and aromatic New World hops. Exemplary for its style: the hops get a lot of credit, more so than in many other new European BIPAs, and lift the whole thing up to a beautiful, gracious and delicate fragrance, while at the same time the toasted malt bitter(sweet)ness remains firmly in place. I’d recommend this to any European beer afficionado who is not all too familiar with this modern craft beer style yet. Typical high quality BrewDog standard I’d say, without the extremes into which they (all too) often get lost these days. Bierdimpfe (640) - Quebec, CANADA - SEP 17, 2016
Opaque black color with a small amount of glass clinging activity. Slightly frothy light brown 2 finger head, lasting around 5 minutes, creating a very good amount of lacing. Flavors of hops and nuts, piney, citrus, dark berries, faint chocolate and coffee, buttery, whiskey like feel, thick herbal spices. Highly bitter with a low perception of sugar. Slick light body with a perfect amount of sharp carbonation. Strong finish and long dry astringent feel of pine, clove and orange peels, and grassy noble hops, with a hint of oak. Overall this is a good bold craft with decent but intense flavors. IPA style black ale. I find it overly spicy and unbalanced. Low freshness, highly boozy, but quite warming. m.mahu (191) - Iasi, ROMANIA - SEP 16, 2016
Bottle at Beer Zone Iasi, Ro. Pleasent nose with citrus, hops, little head white. The taste follows with citrus, fresh hops and a bit of coffee and alcohol. Very good and perfect for long sessions. Recommended. Jagienka (451) - Łask, POLAND - SEP 10, 2016

Taste a little bitter, quite like stout or porter. Finish is dry and bitter. jimbonga (144) - - AUG 12, 2016
Bottle. Almost black with a medium beige head. Aroma of blackberry, grapefruit, pine and mint. Slightly oily to taste, similar flavours to aroma with a little bit of roast malt and cocoa in the finish. TrefwoordPunk (1214) - Leiden, NETHERLANDS - AUG 11, 2016
Bottle 33 cl. Pours pitch black with a medium tan creamy head and an aroma of roasted malts, black coffee, dark chocolate, earthy notes, citrus, syrup and salmiac. The taste is light to medium sweet with some bitterness and a long but not too bitter finish. Really nice!

-A note of spiciness in the end.
-Less bitter comparing to Vagabond, letting alone Jack Hammer with the same alcohol percentage.
-Overall, more of a stout-like taste, roasty.
