#Mashtag 2014 - a beer for the people, by the people.
The #Mashtag concept is simple. We invited the public to vote on each aspect of the brew, from hops to malt to the special twist and even the label design, and from the thousands of possibilities this presented, the result is an imperial red ale, brewed with copious speciality malts, a global blend of hops, and blood orange, lemon peel and orange peel.
On the nose, there’s a riot of citrus, in many forms, from orange pith to lemon zest, via lime juice and even lemongrass. Fresh, bright resinous notes blend with light toasty malt aromas.
The palate is intense with toffee, with tiny hints of tobacco smoke coming through in little bursts, but the star attraction is an all-out bitter orange avalanche. A slightly psychotic, orange-that-thinks-it’s-a-grapefruit character builds upon and intensifies the hop bitterness, squaring up against the rich sweet malt base. The result is a huge red ale with a drinkable quality you’d expect in a beer half this strength.

Bottle 0,33L. Clear, red color with small, frothy, light brown head. Rich aroma of ripped dark fruits like blueberries, cassis, red orange. Moderate bitter taste with strong fruity note, a lot of bitterness at the end and very well hidden alcohol. Medium to full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. I left it to get old and it turns out almost perfect...

A bit to sweet for my likings. Anyway a decent evening sipper.
Dark amber color with a fine tan head. Ok lacing. Full body and a smooth carbonation. A bit sweet, but still a decent bitterness. Oily texture. Bready, hoppy, fruity, yeast, some spices and toffee in the flavor.

Bottle, february 20th 2015. Dark amber body with a small beige head. Aroma is hoppy of pine and grapefruit, with toast and dark berries. Taste is dry and bitter, yet with a nice burned caramel taste, with fruity hops towards the end. Light alcohol sting with a sweet fruit aftertaste. Not bad!

330mL bottle from Beer Cartel. Deep copper body, pours a thin beige head. Aroma quite rich - dark toffee, treacle, oxidised honey & sultana, earthy cooked citrus hop character. Lovely chewy resiny body, smooth, moderate slightly creamy carbonation. Body has a good solid luscious toffee, chewy biscuity malt backbone, hint of cocoa & raisin, lots of dark citrus, and earthy hops. Plenty of bitterness, lingering finish with some warmth. Age has no wearied this brew - held up nicely and developed some lovely undertones.

33cl bottle. Slightly hazy amber colour with a thin off-white head. Fair retention. Caramel, roasted, citrus, red fruits, vanilla and light spices in the aroma. Soft carbonation and medium to full body. Taste is sweet with some spicy and citrus notes. Overall, a strange but good beer.

Bottle 0,33l. Brown to ruby body, almost clean, small beige head. Aroma of honey, liqueur, strawberries, bread, some bark. Taste is difficult, mainly sourness what is changing to bitterness. Herbal bitterness in the finish. Very dry. Red berries, especially wild rowanberries (with whole their tartness), herbs, roasted grains, liqueur, strawberries, something honey-like (but absolutely without sweetness). Average full body, soft carbonated.
Well done, but too dry for me.
