An epic fusion of age old Belgian tradition, American new wave brewing and the world of Scotch whisky.
Mix Tape 8 is a blend of two huge oak aged beers half a hopped up Belgian Tripel, and half a Triple India Pale Ale. These beers have both been aged in single grain whisky barrels for close to two years and finally blended to create a beer that our head brewer Stewart Bowman can most helpfully describe as fucking complex.
Mix Tape 8 is a high octane blend of styles, influences and processes. This beer is a blend of 2 huge oak aged India Pale Ales. Half of this beer is rooted in an amped up, hopped up Belgian Tripel which has been aged in Scotch Whisky casks for almost 2 years. The other half of the equation is a triple India Pale Ale which has also been aged in Scotch Whisky barrels for close to 2 years. This beer is inspired by the Belgian Monastic brewing tradition and its centuries of heritage, the hopped up American new wave craft brewing and everything that rocks about Scotch Whisky barrels and oak aging.

Pours a brownish reddish colour (caramel basically). Very little head which dissipates quite quickly. Completely clear. Very very rich and sweet aroma, complex, lots of caramel. Has a vinous quality and the whisky casks are really noticeable too, lots of woody and vanilla aromas are coming through. Pine from the hops is also intense, but the other more forward qualities of the Hops have been lost with age. No boozy aromas, even at 14.5%. What a beautiful aroma this beer has. Seldomly have I smelt something as nice as this. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body, a bit boozy, spicy and woody on the palate. Flavours are again rich and complex but not as sweet as in the nose (mind you, still sweet). Vinous qualities with plum, grape and raisin characters are met by a cask (with vanilla notes) and wood impression. Caramel is rather intense. Some herbal and pine notes but very slight, especially compared to the aroma. Finishes sweet and with a distinct honey taste which stays with you for a long time. The IPA part of this has been mostly lost with time but its still a beautiful beer. Also not very Belgian IMHO - tastes more like a really good barrel aged barley wine to me (I guess this was different two years ago). I still really like how this has turned out - heavy, vinous and rich with very noticeable barrel-aging characteristics. Style may not correspond to the description anymore but I really adore this beer nevertheless.

Brown with a small tan head. Aroma is wood, cocoa, chocolate, caramel, hazelnut, dried fruits. Taste is caramel, chocolate, honey, complex fruit notes (bananas, peaches, grapes, dried fruits, raspberries), herbal notes, light woody and hazelnut taste. Sweet aftertaste. Warming but very light alcohol taste for a 14.5 ABV.

330ml bottle, cannot remember where from. Long neglected on the beer shelf and only opened after a Christmas & Boxing Day of distinctly average beers. Pours hazy deep brown, small off-white head. Aroma is a little musty, faint caramel malt, whisky. Taste is smooth, with delicate light flavours, hints of whisky, caramel with a faint underlying sweetness. After reading reviews from the time of release, it seems this has lost a certain depth of flavour, instead levelling out its previous complexity to a rather tame barley wine-type character. Shame given how much I paid at the time. Still.. not unenjoyable.

330 ml bottle with art box bought at Gorgeous Wine & Cigar in Yuen Long circa 2014.

Looks: Cloudy hazy amber brown with misty yeast particles; near zero head with bare residual soapy off-white foam which fades in 10 seconds; Poor sticky lacing with barely notable very slight carbonation.

Aroma: Very fragrant Ale malt, With strong cognac, whisky, strong dark fruits, rich caramel, steamed crab meat, vanilla, lychee, pine, strong resin, strong spice, strong floral, sugar, oak, strong yeast, lemon and strawy grass. This is intense!

Taste: Strong sweet rich Ale malt, with strong Cognac, Whisky, heavy caramel, strong plums and dark fruits, cherry / red fruits, vanilla, strong floral, strong sugar syrup, pine, very strong resins, spices, strong oak barrel, light biscuits, strong lemon, mid to strong bitter hops and grass.

Body: Mid to light body; Thin but very oozy palate.

Mouth Feel: Very strong Ale maltyness in a surprisingly light background. Very thin and watery but dont be fooled, this is where the intensity begins: heavy caramel warped inside strong Cognac and lesser Whisky, followed by equally strong plums and cherries. Strong oak cask with tasty vanilla, spices and strong floral. Very strong sweetness but surprisingly not cloying at this level. Hoppy pine with strong ooze and strong lemon as compliments. Very nice!

Booziness: The 14.5% abv has the feel of Sake, evidenced by omnipresent steamed crab flesh. Slightly warm, liquorish but never harsh, with moderate liquorices gives the bitterness some boost. Very good!

Hoppiness: Strong Lychee, pine, strong resin, strong spice, strong floral, lemon and grass in nose. Strong floral, pine, very strong resins, spices, strong lemon and grass in taste. Bitterness is fairly strong for a lasting, mid to high astringent sweet-bitter caramel malty finish.

After Taste: Quite dry. Liquor-ish sweet and bitter to mouth.

Comments: This one feels like a more refined version of strong Belgian Ambre, where the strong liquor characters were mellowed by fine vanilla and woodiness from oak aging. The strong booze couldnt hide the intense 3Cs aroma and oozy spicy hops, rich dark fruity taste and sweetness is acceptable. A fine tasting experience to have on Boxing day. Cheers!

Bottle at home from Brewdog online, pulled out from the back of the cellar. A lightly hazed sticky amber / orange coloured pour with a fading light tan head. Aroma is sweet toffee, woody , mint, brown sugars, brandy, boozey fruit pudding. Little age and jammy fruits on the nose as well. Flavour is composed of very sweet sticky earthy toffee, burnt toffee, boozy cognac, whiskey, jammy fruits and boozzy cakey malts. A little bitter woody tannin in the finish. Palate is medium sweet and sticky, lowish carbonation, viscous.. Held up pretty well with age.

Unclear, ruby red colored, small off white non lasting head. Aroma is of caramel, dried fruit, some spice, bit vinous and more wood, leather, boozy. Taste is very sweet malt and caramel, some toffee, dried fruits, some spice, leather, bit walnut, woody notes but not really that strong whisky or oaky, quite strong boozy finish and warming aftertaste, some bubblegum in the finish as well. Full bodied, soft carbonation, sticky. Dont really see a point in blending aged hopped up (well, aging hops...) beer but OK. Interesting but way too boozy... (bottle from the brewery, thanks Nikola)
