An epic fusion of age old Belgian tradition, American new wave brewing and the world of Scotch whisky.
Mix Tape 8 is a blend of two huge oak aged beers – half a hopped up Belgian Tripel, and half a Triple India Pale Ale. These beers have both been aged in single grain whisky barrels for close to two years and finally blended to create a beer that our head brewer Stewart Bowman can most helpfully describe as ‘fucking complex’.
Mix Tape 8 is a high octane blend of styles, influences and processes. This beer is a blend of 2 huge oak aged India Pale Ales. Half of this beer is rooted in an amped up, hopped up Belgian Tripel which has been aged in Scotch Whisky casks for almost 2 years. The other half of the equation is a triple India Pale Ale which has also been aged in Scotch Whisky barrels for close to 2 years. This beer is inspired by the Belgian Monastic brewing tradition and its centuries of heritage, the hopped up American new wave craft brewing and everything that rocks about Scotch Whisky barrels and oak aging.

Interesting: the complicated label doesn’t seem to carry any information about the beer, not even the name; everything is only on the box.
It pours a bright amber color with compact head, although the head is short lived. The aroma is deep and pleasing, very malty, like a good Barley Wine, sweet, hoppy, with hits of vanilla and oak. Full bodied; the flavor is very malty, again like a good Barley Wine, sweet with no excess of roasted malt character, some toffee instead; bold bitterness, but well balanced in this strong malty beer, with a mix of soft hop resins and hop fruits; the vanilla/oak in the final is a cherry on top.
I get the same feeling as the first time I had Dogfish Head Immort Ale and similar beers: powerful and candy-sweet, my kind of sipper.

Bottle at home, from BD Online, 16/10/14. Amber with reddish hues topped with a decent beige covering. Nose is candied frut peel, sweet notes, touch of booze, bitter tropical bastards, light smoke, toffee. Taste comprises sweet tingles, rich caramel, candied fruit peel, booze tunes, light spice, toffee fudge, figs, dates. Full bodied, fine carbonation, warming alcohol in the close. Decent offering, boozey do but drinks a good chunk below the ABV!

Bottle from Systembolaget. Clear amber/mahogany beer with a small but lasting offwhite head. Malty caramel aroma, grassy hops, fruity, vinous, toffee, vanilla, pine, floral, some licorice. Malty fruity aroma, warming alcohol, vinous, vanilla, hoppy fruity notes, citrus, caramel, pine, toffee. Finish brings warming alcohol, vanilla, toffee, caramel, some pine neeles, and mango. Very interesting mix of beers.

Bottle 330ml @Beer Hunters
Deep clear ruby color, small white head. Strong toffee and alcohol aroma. Medium to full bodied, sticky palate. Sweet toffeish flavor, some vanilla and some whiskey lurking in the background. Suprisingly this is not like its concept - this is actually quite simple beer, but probably gets better over the years. Good one anyway.

330ml bottle (the 200e of overpriced shit session)
Sticky stodgy malty aroma. Dark, tan head. Dirty palate. Some marker pen esters, gonna get high. Odd citrussy twist in the retronasals. Pretty rough malty body stodgy. wet rye bread. Finish is just the fading of the taste, nothing new. Do like the malts. This wanted to be AleSmith Wee Heavy. This failed so badly.

Bottle. Almost clear in the glass, amber in color and with a small, beige head. The aroma is lightly alcoholic, with dried fruits, caramel and some faint roasted malts, there’s pine cones, resins and boozy, some bread crust, nuts and dark sugar. It’s full-bodied, warming and softly carbonated, with loads of flavors. bread, caramel, dried fruits, dark sugar, some wood, pine cones and resins and a decent bitterness. Lasting finish. Rather wonderful this one, sure complex, a beer that needs quite some time to be consumed, and it’s sure repeatable. 150814

Benzai (16914) - Oirschot, THE NETHERLANDS, NETHERLANDS - OCT 30, 2014
Bottle @ weekly tasting shared with Dutchdrebus and Thompson. Nice red color, average to medium sized off-white head that diminishes quite quickly. Aroma is sweetish malts, sweetness, some oak and whisky influences in the aroma. Somehow I don’t really like it. Taste malts, oak, lightly alcoholic, sweetish, sweetish alcohol, bitter.
