Rated on my wives first Mothers Day Forrestal Apt West Seneca NY.Pours a dark jet black color with medium carbonation, thick head and good lacing. Huge aromas of brownie, chocolate, coffee, caramel, toffee, raisin, wood, dark molasses and brown sugar. Flavors highly sweet upfront with brown sugar, medium smoked wood (especially in the finish), medium alcoholic presence, molasses, slight chocolate/toffee/caramel. One of the most sweet stouts I’ve tried that takes away from the other complex flavors as does the alcohol. A great sipping beer that is worthy to buy again. There is plenty of complexity to this barrel aged stout. Dried fruit and peat combines with the bracing whisky notes to round out this beer. I got a little smoke and heat, this is very malt forward. Wood and eau-de-vie impressions lead a fruity attack into a complex dark chocolate and roast plateau before a splash of whisky sets up algae, caramel and even more roast in the aftertaste. A surprisingly impressive Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout, from every angle.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam crowns the dark brown-edged black.
-The body is leaner than I had expected, which I like.
-For all its potency, this remains a classy Impy.
-Raisins also appear in the aftertaste.
-Carbonation is soft, leaving plenty of room for the malts and barrel to express themselves.
-This one is not trying to be excessive or aggressive. It’s complex and accomplished throughout, and actually a pleasure to sip..

Bottle to glass. Oil pitch black pour with a thin khaki head. Nose is sweet dark chocolate, peat, booze. Taste is sweet cherry and chocolate up front mixed with mild peat from the Scotch barrel, and nice boozey body. Abv is hidden well. MacBoost (1886) - Victor, New York, USA - APR 6, 2014
11.2oz bottle from Beers of the World, Henrietta, NY. $12. Pours an inky black. Only a very little dark brown around the edges when held directly to a 90 watt light bulb. Aromas of roast, chocolate, booze. I get some bourbon notes, but no peat. Taste is sweet. Flavors of very deep roast, some decent amount of smokiness, roasted logs on the fireplace. Pretty smoky and deep. Very sweet, but matched up with the enormous ABV, it’s not entirely cloying. Getting a little honey in there as well. Very low carbonation. Warming. Pretty damn deep and complex. Finishes sweet with a total mind fuck of roast on the back end. 3/30/2014. 12 oz. bottle. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aromas are sweet and oaky with chocolate, vanilla and licorice. Sweet whiskey flavors with a hint smoke. More licorice, vanilla and chocolate. A bit sticky, but the high alcohol is muted. Very good.
