Draft at Bavarian Lodge, 11 oz. goblet, $7.50. Black color, with a half-finger tan stoutish head. I closed my eyes to smell it without seeing the back beer, and imagined a citrussy, fresh IPA hop. The spectral smell of Belgian special and pilsener malts, also a touch of wintergreen. The first brings me to the end of a race between chocolate roast malts and big IIPA hops… and… it’s a tie! A warming feel comes from the malts as much as from the alcohol. In spite of the alcohol and some dark roasted hops, it’s an easy drinking beer. But that doesn’t keep a pleasant malty and hop bitter aftertaste from settling on the back of my soft palate.
Bottle from systembolaget Sweden best before 2010-12-25 sampled 2016-04-29. Tiny lingering brown head. Clear dark brown red color. Nice chocolate aroma and full bodied malty taste. Draft Half Pint at White Horse Old Ale Festival 2009, Parsons Green, London in Nov 2009 - Black in colour. Malty; roasty malts, caramel, coffee, hint of chocolate. Fruity; citrus-grapefruit, raisins, dark fruit. Hoppy; piney resinous hops, earthy hops. Good malt/fruit/hop balance but more "Roasty IPA" than "Hoppy Imp Stout". Enjoyed this. Nice Beer! At a tasting, smallish bubbly head, very dark brown but not completley opaque, dark bread and chocolate aroma with some old hops, flavor of intense dark chocolate with some coal and charred notes, quite bitter. Drinkable but not too exciting. JPDIPSO (6293) - Wauwatosa, USA - JUL 27, 2015
Dark brown color with a stable, moderate, tan head. Lightly roasted malt with fresh grassy hops in the background. Touches of resin and pine in the nose as well. Malty and roasty in the front. Refreshing hops and hearty, yet crisp malt make this quite enjoyable. Reminds me of Great Danes Cascade Mountain Porter. 3/10

Pour on tap at Tap and Handle, dark reddish black pour with light tan head, aroma brought notes of dark chocolate, molasses, sherry, some slight earth, spice comes into a hint of cherry, dark berry, slight oaky and sweet vanilla notes. Taste was a mix of roast, cocoa, earth into some dark berry, some dark fruits into a bit of oxidized malt with sherry, slight grass, finishing slightly sweet, slightly boozy. 11.2oz bottle, shared with friends. Bottled on 25/12/10, it looks like the label says... Batch 298. Ungh... surprisingly, holding up pretty damn well. Some nice milk chocolate, mild spice. Very dark brown color, has kind of a stout-like appearance. Thin off-white head, good bits of lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of crisp light carbonation, mild chewiness. Dry finish. Touch of oxidization, but it’s not distracting, and works well with the dark malt and mild smokey flavors. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, light to moderate sweet, touch of mild sour, some soy sauce. Interesting stuff to try.. Very fun to try for sure. I remember seeing this on the shelf of my early days of beer-rating, and thinking ’nah, I’ll save that for later’, after glancing at the price. I kind of wish I tried it fresh, but nonetheless I’m glad I had an opportunity to try it at all. Bottle to snifter (shared by DrSilverworm). Looks good; a lightly translucent dark cola with light beige head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells malty and a little boozy with a bit of roast as well. Tastes like it smells, but less robust, with a medium-bodied mouthfeel that’s a bit thinner than I’d prefer. it was a bit of a hop assault, but not quite ruinous. supposedly a belgian black dbl ipa, but lacking all but a very subtle belgian yeasty presence, and also hoppy - but not quite as hoppy as your typical west coast dbl ipa. spicy fruit, chocolate and nmolasses present in the aroma and flavor as well. poured black with an off white lasting head. the alcohol was prevelant at this age in the flavor as well. warming, but not hot. smooth, with a lingering bitter aftertaste. tastes a little more like a Brewdog beer than a Stone beer, but good either way."
