When we brewed the first ever batch of Tokyo, we decided to fill three whisky casks, two Highland and one Lowland. Tokyo Rising Sun is the result. We cannot decide if it is a good or bad thing that we managed to forget about these barrels for 4 years. It is definitely a good thing we found them. Brewed in May 2008. And then forgotten about. A beautiful accident. An unsuspecting masterpiece. A beery time capsule. This imperial stout has been aged in a Scotch whisky cask for over 4 years. For more than 48 long months this beer lay hidden in oak in the depths of our north east of Scotland warehouse. Highland Edition Tasting Notes: aged in a Highland whisky cask resulting in a viscous slow motion roller coaster of powdered cacao, hints of burning pirate ships, salted caramel, sharp berries and toasted marshmallow. Best enjoyed with a dose of vagrant optimism.

33 cL bottle, #1201. Pours pitch black with a small chocolate brown head. Aroma is tarish, dark roasted malty and breadish. Sweet, tarish and vegetables. Solid sweet, tarish and smoked. Overly sweet and dense dark smoked malty. Strange combo, sugarish and tarish smoked.

0,33 l bottle, thanks Armando629! Black as hell, small creamy tan head. Tart, earth and a huge cloud of smoke and burnt wood, peat and agressive smoke, raisins and some molasses, cocoa in the agressive aroma. Smoke and smoke and smoke in the taste again. Peat with caramel, smoke with burnt sugar, molasses with roasted grains.

Bottle shared by Bonke! Pours black with a tiny brown head. Aroma of PEAT, huge smokey, burned sugar, woolen sweater, wet ropes, sea salt, vanilla and burned caramel. In ya face all the way. Taste is very sweet and smokey. A lot of peat, burned sugar, salmiak, wood, salty, lots of alcohol and intense. A bit too much for me.

Bottle, 10/22/2012. Pours black, thin mocha tan head fades rather quickly, fine ring of lacing. Smokey, peaty, salty aroma, with tobacco, chocolate, caramel, dark fruits and whisky, barrel. Taste is sweet chocolate and berries, iodine, roasted spicy smokiness, whisky heat. Thick palate, smooth, alcohol surprisingly well-integrated, long finish. Very much enjoyed this one- well done big beer.

Bottle. Thanks Bonke! Pours pitch black. Aroma loads of smoke, salted liquorice, burnt sugar, wool sweater, cheese, burnt malts, red berries, tar, whiskey, you really get the barrel. Taste, earthy, tobacco, musty, burnt sugar, whiskey, liquorice, candy sweetness, dusty, chocolate. Loads of smoke. A bit on the sweet side. But very enjoyable.

from Erzbierschof - black beer with a slightly chaotic dark beige foam left; huge roasted aroma of molasses, cacao and black cherries; peated; thick and very oily; full-bodied; very tasty; a robust sweetness toped by a strong bitterness; long peated aftertaste of black chocolate, whisky, caramel and licorice with a robust warming alcohol kick - huge !

Purchased from Brewdog Online Store, drunk alongside a Tokyo*. Comparatively thinner with less of a full-on ’punch’ of flavour in the beginning, but offering a much more exciting lingering flavour. Peaty smoke and a real smoothness on display. Quite an exciting beer, but at £25 a pop not an experience I’ll be having often.

Pre GBBF shindig 2012. Black islay so i don’t like it decent but just not my thing and too boozy whisky. Thanks to Craig again.

Pours pitch black with nice tan head. Aroma is rich. Tar, whiskey, smoke, peat, sweet and syrup. Full flavor is sweet peat, smoke, whiskey, brown sugar and alcohol. Swell!
