2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20
11.2 oz bottle served in a snifter
A - Pours pitch black with a dark esspresso head
S - Astringent bakers chocolate, booze, licorice, tobacco, dank earthy hay, old malts,
T - Wow! Super sweet(I’m talking diabetic coma sweet!) licorice, syrup, concentrated grape juice, straight raw brown sugar, sweet tobacco juice, tart fruit helps out a little with the cloying sweetness. Finishes with a peppery alcohol bite.
M - Heavy sugary body, low carbonation, cloyingly sweet.
This one is hard to drink. Sweet does nothing to describe this sugary substance. Thank God there was some tartness in there to combat it. There’s good flavors in there but is just overtaken with the sweetness. I wanted to like this but this is a mess.

I'm reviewing the 2017 edition, which has slightly different etiquette. Abstract: A blackberry burst stout with pleasant palate, harmonious pairing of aroma, taste and after taste and fine cognac-like elegance. Pours with no head really. Color is dark coffee. I wonder if it's a feature or just a random occasion that the little foam that this beer has left a five-pointer star on top of the beer. Just like there's the * symbol after the name. Aroma is rich and strong. Initial impression is of good cognac, secondly coffee, then cocoa, cloudberry (or similar berry) liqueur, maybe a hint of vanilla, maybe a small hint of marzipan. Finally there's some fine "old woody" (or tar-like) aroma. The aroma raises my expectations. Instantly I notice that the palate of this is flawless. It's not the best palate I've had, but it has no faults I think. The beer feels noticeably thick in mouth. The taste is harmonious to the aroma. There's still a slight sensation of cognac, but without the cognac body. Rather, the body has been replaced by blackberry mash. It has rich blackberry taste, which is accompanied by ammonia and Jägermeister-like herbal liqueur notes. Some bitterness and burnt aroma in after taste. The finish is very fitting and "completes" this beer. It's a strong beer, but I cannot taste the alcohol, rather it "warms up" the beer nicely just like fortified wines or berry-based spirits (e.g. cognac) do. This was a rather expensive bottle for me (costing 14 euros for 330ml bottle). Reading the ingredients list one can see that there are some "unorthodox" ingredients here: cranberry, jasmine, vanilla. Oddly, I cannot taste cranberry nor jasmine directly, although I picked up the vanilla. The combination leads to much richer aromas than the components. It's a good beer. I find nothing to complain, except for the price that I have to pay here where I buy it. It deserves full scores, because even though it's not the #1 beer for me, it's still perfect in what it does. carlom (116) - ITALY - JAN 1, 2018
Gradazione 18.2. Colore nero, schiuma fine color nocciola, aspetto oleoso. Aromi di uvetta, caramello, malto tostato, marsala. Al palato uvetta, prugna, caramello, malti tostati, legno, porto. Carbonazione assente, corpo pieno, molto liquorosa. Inizia molto dolce ma il finale è secco ed evidentemente amaro. Una birra da sorseggiare dove il considerevole grado alcolico viene gestito discretamente. martijnendaan (37) - - DEC 29, 2017

330ml bottle from Brewdog shop.
Small tan head, minimal lacing. Dark black body. Nose is roasted coffee and berries. Flavour is red berries, chocolate, coffee, booze, syrup. Lingering fruit finish with a little bitterness. Light carbonation, syrupy mouthfeel, like medicine. Great sipping stout.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2017 Nuclear strength stout! Fantastic, smoky, deep, dark, complex; missing hints of spice that I love in a more complex stouts but this is dense and bitter - the aftertaste is a fierce unfolding of blackened hops. Truly stunning. However- This was headache inducing. 16.5%? That f*cked me, fairplay. deepdrinker (367) - Leeds, ENGLAND - DEC 17, 2017
