Shared pint cans poured to snifters, showing a black/brown hue, with a frothy layer of brownish tan head foam, and spots & strands of lacing. The nose was heavily roasted, cocoa, and a combination of grain, nuts & wood that produced a fleeting, light freezer burn scent. Medium to full bodied, with decent carbonation, the taste notes were somewhat similar to the aroma’s, plus some roasted & earthy bitterness, a touch of sweetness, and a bit of creaminess to the mouthfeel. Alcohol was present but well integrated, so somewhat hidden, but then this was less than a full serving. Belgian yeast notes were somewhat subdued, but a robust & tasty brew, nonetheless. 2012 can. Pours black. Aroma and taste are chocolate, roasted malts, and light sweetness. RobertDale (6764) - Lansing, Kansas, USA - SEP 3, 2013
Tall can. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of chocolate, malt, coffee, and fruit. Taste is dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, dark fruit, and licorice. Nice stuff. AdamChandler (5150) - Enfield, New Hampshire, USA - FEB 10, 2013
Tall-Boy can into a wine glass at 60F. 2 finger coffee colored head. Pitch black pour. Nose is coffee beans and roasted espresso. hint of chocolate and roasted barley. some tobacco. Taste is chocolate for miles. It’s a lot of chocolate. Sort of smoked taste which bleeds over into licorice. It’s a decent beer but I don’t get what’s "Belgian" about this beer. I’d call this more of a smoked imperial porter than a stout. dresden (1581) - Saskatchewan, CANADA - NOV 30, 2012
Can as an extra from Marco, thanks! Thick motor oil black low on carb but with a short tan head. Nice chocolate aroma with some anise and light smoke. Nice and bitter chocolate, maybe a little heavy on chocolate but its a very creamy beer that drinks easily. Not sure how Belgian it is but it’s good!

A good Vivant. Pours black with a small slice of retained head. Mild roast aroma. Smooth mouthfeel. Good drinking, lots of chocolate make up for an understated stout. Can from a generous friend, your name goes here. BMMillsy (1788) - Florida, USA - OCT 13, 2012
UPDATED: FEB 17, 2013 On tap at Michigan Brewers Guild in Ypsi. Pours black with huge chocolate notes on the nose. Flavor is extremely smooth and heavy on the chocolate. Hides the alcohol and goes down easy. Excellent stout!

Blackish brown appearance. Next to no head. Flavor of chocolate and coffee, licorice and dark fruits. Tmoney99 (14869) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - AUG 17, 2012
Draft. Poured a black color with an average fizzy brown head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted chocolate, yeast and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted dark chocolate malt sweet flavor with a medium to heavy dark sweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. This is standout beer.

Draft to taster at Brewery Vivant. Looks good; pitch black with nice tan lacing. Smells good too; malt and chocolate. Tastes just like it smells with a pleasant mouthfeel. Excellent beer!
